Did Oilers GM do Rangers a favor?

Had Oilers GM Kevin Lowe - whose team is questionable in nets - gone after Henrik Lundqvist at $9 million, the Rangers would not have been able to sign Brendan Shanahan. They might have found themselves forced to walk away from Sean Avery's salary arbitration. They might have been required to move Petr Prucha at $1.6 million. But Lowe didn't go after the best player on the market and he didn't go after the most cap-vulnerable franchise in the NHL. He didn't do that because of his longtime friendship with Glen Sather, that's why he didn't do it, and everyone knows it.

Good, thank you Kevin.

The reason he didn't do it is because he feels Roloson is fine in net - he'd better be since Lowe spent a buttload of cash on him.

If that's the case, why didn't any other clubs offer Lundqvist that money? This is a retarded post.

What is Brooks smoking? Why would Lowe go for a goalie when he's paying Roloson over $3M this season and their biggest need is on offense? Vanek played junior hockey in Alberta, so was a good option for long term deal. Don't doubt he owes Sather a favor for Nedved three years ago, but this doesn't pass the smell test. The personal attack is also not warranted.

if he spent 9mill on the king it would leave little to build his last place club' no $ to even plow the snow in the parking lots. he has to over pay to get talent to play up there. even 35year old centers would rather go to washington for much less $$$$. no favors here just hot air mr brooks

Lowe is even a bigger jerk now as a general manager than when he was a player, if that's possible !!!

Gimme a break - the one guy he had lst year who didn't underacheive was Roloson, why would you replace him? This is a garbage rumour

I'm sure Slats will return the favor one of these years (if not going after Lundqvist was indeed a favor). Besides, Lowe can use a friend or two. It's lonely at the top in Oil country these days!

Obviously diplomacy is not KLowe's strong suit. He tends to think too much like a player, with player instincts and loyalties instead of a cool headed administrator, which is absolutely necessary to be successful in this business. I'm not sure Lowe can separate the two.

The one position the Oilers have a lot of depth at is in net. They need a scorer to play along Hemsky who is more of a set-up man. I swear Americans shouldn't be alud to talk hockey, we just insult our friends north of the border with this babble.

And why people got so excited about the Oilers offer sheet is beyound me. I would take 4 first round picks from Edmonton. Even with Vanek they will suck next year.

July 10, 2007  11:56 AM ET

That's pretty bad logic. The guy didn't go after his friend's golie when he needed a forward - ipso facto he let his personal feelings get in the way? I thought he just went after the best forward available since, well he needed a forward. What am I missing? I think this is classic W logic. Form conclusion, construct evidence.

it's to bad the oil couldnt snag vanek from buffalo. they could have had quite possibly the most dangerous top line in the past decade with Vanek, Hemsky, and Stortini.

Foolish post. There is no chance Lundqvist would agree to play for the Oilers. He wants to win and he loves New York. There never would have been an offer sheet.
