Changes to Notre Dame's Big East bowl deal

08:50 AM ET 08.15 | When the conversation turns to Notre Dame and its arcane allegiances to bowls with Big East tie-ins, one overarching theme need be kept in mind: If the Irish too often find themselves working through those machinations -- and not bypassing the process entirely with Bowl Championship Series-level seasons -- then there are bigger fish to fry than winter destinations in Orlando or Jacksonville. Still, according to a report from ESPN.com's Brian Bennett, the Big East is near deals with the Champs Sports Bowl and the Sun Bowl while ending its relationship with the Gator Bowl. The fallout for the Irish is this: Notre Dame would be eligible to replace a Big East team in the Champs Sports Bowl only once every four years. Previously the Irish were eligible to replace a Big East team twice in a four-year span.

me too (huh)2..... why don't we just play football without all the circus hoopla and at least make an attempt to return to the glory days! My wish (as a life-long-dedicated-subway-domer) would be (and has been) to see ND in the Big Ten (but then it would probably have to split into two divisions). Living in A2 has always made this a "bar room" discussion with my buddies second only to CW's "career" at ND. Oh well, let's see what they can do this year with a "soft" schedule............

They can play in the Champs Sports Bowl every year for all I care. Good place for them. If they qualify.

I rather have Nick Saban. No way Urban could have the same run at ND as Florida. Saban would be a better fit and we (ND) would have many NCs. Saban gets my vote I don't want Urban.

Nope...but soon. I'm still not convinced we're gonna beat Nevada, so lets be careful what we wish for. There are no losses for us to omit on the 09 schedule yet...life is decent.

I have always thought that ND and the Big Ten would be a good fit.It would toughen up ND"S schedule, and give them access to real Bowl Games.I believe they would need to reconsider the traditional USC and Navy games.I would hate to lose the USC vs. ND rivalry which has been so great over the years.

ND can't schedule any MAC teams... They're all booked up with Michigan and the Bukeyes

Come on how could you leave Penn State out of your comment...but I still think ND would be a perfect MAC team.

ND has always been about ND. When they were good and had a viewer following they took deals that benefited them, with no thought for any other program or what was best for College Football....No sympathy for them at all...They deserve none..

Hey Big Ten fans, you guys can have ND, just send us PSU. They belong in the Big East anyway.

last year 6-6 ND went to a bowls game after and was a bit lucky to get the 6th win. how many teams would have been given a bowl pass after such a sub mediocre season? ND`s glory is past---it aint coming back.
