I've heard from sources that if any team wants to sign Plaxico Burress, commissioner Roger Goodell will suspend him for the first eight games of this season at a minimum, and potentially for the entire 2009 season. The law and order commissioner is not going to take it easy on Burress.

suspend him the entire season

It'll be tough to run routes from a prison cell anyway.

8 games is way too harsh IMO. He didn't hurt anyone, he hurt himself like an idiot.

August 16, 2009  08:33 AM ET

How'd they get a picture of him dropping a deuce?

Ummm..... It is illegal for someone to carry a loaded weapon into a public place in NYC. He is lucky that he only shot himself and not an innocent bystander.

Burris failed getting his degree in Thuganomics.

the whole story reminds me of that movie where Patrick Swayze (playing a criminal on a surfboard) and Keanu Reeves (playing a cop) play counterparts.

In that movie there's a scene where Anthony Kiedis (if I'm not mistaken) shoots himself in the foot because he's being sandwished between a door and a wall

He also broke the law by having a gun in the first place. But it's okay, let's just use the ole "he didn't hurt anyone" excuse.Neither did Vick. Vick didn't hurt anyone. He hurt dogs...right?Morning Schad.

Mornin'. I'm sick and tired of people claiming that since "Dead Eye Burris" didn't hurt anyone but himself, that somehow lessens the impact of what he did.

The D/A in NYC is determined to throw the book at Burris and I hope he does. NYC has strict gun laws and they apply to everyone, including the spoiled idiot athlete.

It's a message to Plax and Lawyer Barfman. What the Commish is saying here is, "Get on with the trial. Don't play the "delay" game. If you think you can get Plax into the game this season by delaying the trial to February, forget about it."

August 16, 2009  09:22 AM ET

Suspend him 2 games or 12 - doesn''t matter. He's off to jail for the rest of his career.

"Point Break". Great movie.

Well he hurt himself, OK maybe that doesn't quite count. But he should go to jail just for being stupid

Hopefully your children look up to the parents...Athletes are no more role models than celebrities on TV. If that is your fear, then do not let your child watch tv or listen to music. Too many BAD role models.
An 8 game suspension sounds about right. A Judge is going to give him more than that after the trial..

This seems the most likely reason. The defense lawyer's been stalling things, hoping to get at best a less-than-a-year sentence that'll pay out in the off season. Commish is saying "I don't think so. Homey don't play dat."

August 16, 2009  09:48 AM ET

Plax will more than likely never play in the NFL again...... Non-story.

Brafman seems like a piece of work. First he lets Plax say no to a plea deal that is better than anything they'll get from a jury, and then he delays the trial. Did he really think he was putting one over on Goodell with that strategy? All the while he tries to sway public opinion by saying that the DA's office shows no intelligence or compassion to Plax's situation. After the NY DA and the commissioner of the NFL, is there anyone else Brafman can p*ss off? Too bad Plax is draining his IRA to pay for this legal "expertise".

As the parent of 20 y/o and 16 y/o boys this is an opportunity to teach a lesson of what NOT to do when given an excellent opportunity like a multi-million dollar contract and a chance to play in the NFL.
The NFL is full of role models, sadly it is the bad characters that garner the bulk of the news and media coverage. Was it not W. Dunn who was building houses all over Tampa for period, I think LT does something similar on the west coast. Every Sunday the united way offers examples of Role Models 3-4 times a game. Again my take away in a situation like this is to show how a bad decision generally only gets worse as the story progresses....first chapter was leaving the house with a weapon. The last chapter has yet to be written; maybe we see it on ESPN's "between the lines" in 10-15 years-- won't be pretty.
