Source: Record offer not enough for Strasburg

The Nationals have already offered Stephen Strasburg a record deal for an amateur, and though the specific amount remains unknown, it exceeds the $10.5 million awarded to Prior in 2001. It also isn't good enough. If Strasburg is to sign, a source said, the offer must grow. Washington's current offer has been on the table since the team's ownership group, along with Stan Kasten and acting general manager Mike Rizzo, traveled to California last week to meet with the pitcher.

He'll be a bust anyway, let'em go.

Who's worse for baseball, Selig or Boras?

August 17, 2009  07:08 AM ET

The odds of any given prospect becoming an ace are very slim. The odds of them becoming an ace without blowing out their arm or shoulder are even slimmer. Let this kid walk. Twenty million dollars for a kid who's never thrown a professional pitch in his life? Ridiculous!

I'm with CardsFan2! Let him pass and see where that gets him! Problem is there's always some idiot club willing to bow down to crap like this!

August 17, 2009  07:24 AM ET

After Joe DiMaggo had his 56 game hit streak he asked for a pay raise for the next season, pointing out the streak the owner said so what have you done for me lately????

The problem is AGENTS and the crap they pull let the kid walk and let the Yankees or Red Sox...............

That's like arguing over the least vicious serial killer.

Wanna borrow my flag?

Mickey Mantle got a pay reduction after one of his best years. When he asked why he was told "Two years ago you were MVP, last year you weren't".

Ralph Kiner got a pay reduction from the Pirates fter hitting somewhere around 50 HR's. He was told "We ended up in last place, we could have done that without you".

Agents such as Boras need to be shot...This kid needs to earn his big payday just like everyone else...Mark Prior prime example as to why not to give a player that type of money. i wouldnt want to pay someone millions of dollars to be on the DL....EARN IT

Carl Pavano thinks you're being a bit harsh

August 17, 2009  07:42 AM ET

Somebody needs to draw the line and I think the Nationals should hold their ground with their current, generous, offer, or say don't let the door hit you on the way out.

So does Mike Hampton.

August 17, 2009  07:45 AM ET

Who care? I don't want to wish any bad luck on the kid, but.....

Albert Belle wants to know if Hampton and Pavano went by the stadiums to pick up their meal money like he did during the years he was on the DL.

Gotta do what Vaughn did, get it in vouchers for the buffet.

A lot of teams can't afford the best draftee's so they draft the ones they know they can sign. Since MLB has not slotting system, there is no real downside of sliding down the draft and being drafted in later rounds.

Is Boras the agent for Michael Crabtree?

August 17, 2009  08:08 AM ET

"It...isn't good enough"

Who didn't see this coming? The Nat's are morons for drafting Strasburg. Let him and his greedy POS agent shake down some other team stupid enough to give in to their extortion.

August 17, 2009  08:29 AM ET

Pretty sick of Boras and Strasburg already.

Why shoot the agent? There is no gun to the owner's head. If he is stupid enough to pay that kind of jack to an unproven commodity, he's a bad businessman and it's his own fault. If there was a sliding rookie scale, this would be avoided but the owners can't seem to save themselves from themselves ...
