09:33 AM ET 08.18 | Former Christian Brothers Academy standout Greg Paulus took another step in his unique journey back to the football field by winning the starting quarterback job of the Syracuse University football team. Head coach Doug Marrone announced Monday night that Paulus would be his starting quarterback. It came one week after Paulus began practicing for the first time with the Syracuse football team after transferring as a graduate student from Duke, where he spent four years playing basketball.

That's impressive. Either he is really good or they are really thin at that position. Or both.

I agree, KF. I did not expect him to ever get meaningful foootball playing time by transferring to another BCS school. Very surprising.

Didn't you read the article? He didn't transfer to a BCS school. He transferred to Syracuse. Sorry 50, I couldn't resist.

Is it just me, or does he look alot less weasel-like in a syracuse football jersey, as opposed to a duke basketball jersey???

I bet when he calls audibles at the line he steps back and smacks the ground as if it were Cameron Indoor's floor.

No doubt Syracuse sucks, but I'll put their history up against your Noles any day. Jimmy Brown arguably the best running back in the history of the NFL and in the NFL HOF; Ernie Davis the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy who unfortunately passed away from Lukemia or he would have been in the backfield with Jimmy Brown in Cleveland; Art Monk NFL HOF; Larry Csonka NFL HOF; John Mackey NFL HOF and namesake of the award given to the best tight end in Division 1-A. Can you name any former Noles that are in the NFL HOF? I can't!!

Months ago, someone on these threads wondered why Marve didn't go to Syracuse. Why didn't Mustain? Do you think either of these fellas could outperform Paulus?

August 18, 2009  01:28 PM ET

Tin Man - Won't know about Paulus until he plays. Don't know where Marve ended up. Isn't Mustain something like #3 on the USC depth chart? My guess is that had either one gone to the 'Cuse they would have had a good chance of starting.

August 18, 2009  01:31 PM ET

Is the depth chart at Syracuse really that bad?

August 18, 2009  01:36 PM ET

Not too long ago, ESPN had a show where they picked what they considered the top twenty college football programs of all times. Syracuse made the list. One comment they made was that Syracuse had more former players in the NFL HOF than FSU, Texas and Oklahoma COMBINED. I haven't researched this, but that's what was said.

I'm not a Noles fan, but I can't believe that you have never heard of Fred Biletnikoff. He's in the NFL HOF, SB MVP and he has an award named after him too, best wide reciever in Division 1-A.

August 18, 2009  01:56 PM ET

Paulus is very good. The Syracuse offensive line is very bad. The Syracuse receivers are mediocre. He has little chance to be very successful and only a medium chance of lasting the whole season free from injury. On the other hand, he gets the kind of chance to follow some dreams that is available to few Division I athletes. Plus, he's a really good kid -- Syracuse coach, fresh from the NFL, says he's never seen anyone work so hard.

NV2, I know of Syracuse's rich football tradition, and I agree with your assesment. (Although, if you check at Canton in about 15-20 years, I think you'll find that FSU will have balanced the scales there.) My wisecrack about the Orange was a friendly jab at one of our respected FN brethren, 50 Year Fan, who is a 'Cuse man. All in good fun...

I think most people forget about Mr. Bilitnekoff having been a 'Nole. His success came before FSU had great success as a program, and unfortunately, people forget about his contributions to the college game. Outside of the FSU community, I think he'll always be remembered as an Oakland Raider.

Ugh - how long does this rebuidling take? I actually miss Pasqueloni who got dumped. I think SU just may need the recruiting help, and any mention in the news is something. I long for the days......go SU, (even with the dink from Duke)

August 18, 2009  02:12 PM ET

The problem with Syracuse is recruiting. They are getting out recruited by Rutgers and UConn.

I agree. I don't usually take things personal but it's tough enough being a 'Cuse fan right now. Thank goodness for Coach Boeheim and the basketball team.

You are right on the money. In fact, when Syracuse hired Robinson he was not their first choice. The first choice was Randy Edsall the UConn head coach whom I believe is a 'Cuse alum.
