DeRosa recruited Smoltz to Cardinals

08:47 AM ET 08.23 | The latest chapter of the Cubs-Mark DeRosa saga finds DeRosa turning into a recruiter. It was his recommendation that led the Cardinals to focus on adding John Smoltz. DeRosa, who played with Smoltz with the Braves, talked to general manager John Mozeliak and manager Tony La Russa after the Red Sox designated Smoltz for assignment Aug. 7. He encouraged them to look past the poor results with the Red Sox, selling Smoltz for his leadership skills, then suggesting to Smoltz that he might thrive with the Cardinals, given the similarities with the Braves.
