Why Dodgers didn't want Penny

New Giants pitcher Brad Penny sustained a shoulder injury last season and fell out of favor with the Dodgers and their management, his character becoming a sore point. It's reportedly a reason the Rockies - whose manager, Jim Tracy, had Penny in 2005 in Los Angeles - didn't pursue him, despite losing Aaron Cook to an injury. Penny didn't help his reputation last year. His request for a contract extension in spring training was declined, and he said the Dodgers didn't believe he was hurt and criticized the coaching staff, mentioning Larry Bowa by name, for not being supportive. The team severed ties with Penny before the season ended, and Bowa blasted him, saying he was lazy, out of shape, always late and refused to assist younger players.

Correct answer: because he stinks.

Larry Bowa being less then sympathetic to a slacker? You don't say? Bowa rides the guys who need it and if he was all over him there was a reason.

I think I can sum up this article nicely by saying that Penny is a world champion crazy straw shrimper.

Giants can have him. Good luck with that

My apologies. I didn't realize they were a significant strata in your socioeconomic subgroup. That's nice, though!

This is either kharma, or "The truth hurts, but it will set you free"...

He definitely looks out of shape to me...

Penny. Not even worth that.

September 1, 2009  09:52 AM ET

don't worry the Giants pitching coach will notice a mechanical flaw and turn a near 6 era AL East pitcher into a stud overnight

You are 100% correct. If they told him to "haul a*s," he'd have to make two trips!!

He should be pulling a two bottom plow in the Ozarks

Chisoxmark - How do you feel about your Sox sending Jim Thome to the Dodgers?

September 1, 2009  10:05 AM ET

He was half-way decent for the Sox through mid-season, then lost it in late July. Got pounded in August.

But he could still be an effective #5 starter for the Giants in September. If he gets back to the best that he was for Boston and now against NL lineups. But if he stays where he was in August, then he's going to hurt them.

From May 3rd through July 4th, Penny made 13 starts for the Red Sox and had an ERA of 3.68. If the Giants can get that out of him, they will be quite happy.
