White Sox ready to deal veterans?

Conventional wisdom would suggest general manager Kenny Williams is going to take one last look at the standings and see the wide gap that separates his White Sox from the first-place Detroit Tigers, the second-place Indians and even the third-place Twins. From there, Williams trades his older, more proven players for youth and potential, and the Sox disappear for a year to two while in rebuild mode. So that's why the White Sox are much more likely to make a deal such as the one rumored to be Jermaine Dye and Jose Uribe to the Padres for shortstop Khalil Greene and relief pitcher Scott Linebrink. Or maybe Williams unloads the fading Jose Contreras for a promising rookie outfielder like the Dodgers' Matt Kemp or the Phillies' Michael Bourn.

Padres are going nuts looking for a bat. They need one, but Dye? And the Dodgers need hitting, not pitching.

July 9, 2007  09:19 AM ET

The Giants needed hitting, not pitching too, but that didn't stop them from giving the most ridiculous contract in history to Zito. I think sometimes these GM's get too clever for their own good.

July 9, 2007  09:55 AM ET

Theres no way either of those deals would happen

July 9, 2007  10:14 AM ET

Why in the world would the Padres deal Linebrink? Good middle relief is IMPOSSIBLE to find. And Khalil Greene has been mashing of late. Too early to give up on the kid for the likes of Uribe and Dye. Dye's old and his best is way the hell behind him. The Pods are better off standing pat.

The Phils should just stay away from the trading deadline this year....They have no shot to get anyone of importanct....They have thee MOST barren minor league system in the majors.....and they can't go and trade someone from their everyday lineup and possibly kill the 2nd highest scoring team in the ML.....If they're doomed to miss the playoffs again, Philly fans are used to it....

Gillick should just let Garcia, Lieber, and whoever else is in their last year of their contracts go and start over with a little more salary room so he can build the type of team that he would like to see out there...

Pat Burrell....I think the boy needs contacts....he can't see what he's swinging at....I got some advice for Pat Burrell....GET GLASSES....DON'T WORRY ABOUT PEOPLE LOOKING AT YOU LIKE YOU'RE A DORK....YOU'RE NOT COOL IN THE FIRST PLACE....SO GLASSES WON'T HURT YOUR PERSONA....

The White Sox will continue their long downward spiral into laughability.

July 9, 2007  11:32 AM ET

The Mets will take those pitchers - watch and see.

July 9, 2007  11:41 AM ET

Any deal shipping out JUAN Uribe sounds like a good one to me. I don't see the Padres going for that awful deal though.

July 9, 2007  11:44 AM ET

hasn't Gillick learned enough from the failed Garcia deal than to give Bourn up for the aging Jose Contreras? no way that deal goes down...

July 9, 2007  12:14 PM ET

Are you serious? No way would a Kemp for Contreras trade be worth the Dodger's while. As a loyal Dodger fan I'd rather make due with what we have now, than trade away the future (Loney, Kemp, Abreu, Billingsley, Broxton, Martin) for fading talent (aka. the vast majority of the White Sox lineup).

July 9, 2007  12:23 PM ET

I believe the only player the White Sox will trade is Contreras. Jermaine Dye is also a possibility, but they can probably re-sign him cheap next year if they want to keep him. The pitchers (Buehrle, Garland, Vazquez) aren't going anywhere because they're all signed and productive. Danks has even been pitching better. The White Sox don't necessarily have to rebuild for 2 years from now. You never know what can happen in the A.L. Central. The teams that are on top today are not going to be guaranteed to be on top next year, or even by the end of this year. There are enough problems on all the teams ahead of the White Sox that the Sox could easily win the division next year. If Thome, Podsednik, Erstad, etc. can stay off the DL next year they will be much improved with just the players they already have on the roster. They do have to dangle Contreras to possibly get some bullpen help, and maybe even Dye if he can help in that department.

July 9, 2007  12:35 PM ET

Sox shoukd trade Dye, Contreras, Iguchi, uRibe, Podsednik, and Matt Thorton. They can get great young talent for all of the players and if it is not major league talent they have that in their minors system Dye-Ryan Sweeney, Contreras-Lance Brodway, Iguchi-Andy Gonzalez, uribe-???, Podsednik-jerry Owens, Matt Thorton-Andrew Sisco or Gio Gonzalez

Also I wold like to see them trade the terriblely inconsistent javier Vasuez while he is hot with his k rate they can get the same talent as they wolud have for Burleh.

July 9, 2007  12:40 PM ET

NO WAY will San Diego trade Khalil Greene and Linebrink for Dye, as has been documented already by Padre officials for the last week. Enough of the B.S. please.

July 9, 2007  12:40 PM ET

Padres now have M Bradley, Contreras s/b traded to the Mets who may be able to give up a pitching prospect or an OF for him. Dye could be traded to oh say the Yanks to fill their DH role. Uribe could be traded for an arm.

July 9, 2007  01:02 PM ET

lol Geez, why did the White Sox have to sign Buehrle to that extension...that was a more fun headline than this one.

The Dodgers could use a starting pitcher, yes, but giving up a young outfielder for an old geezer just doesn't seem very smart. :-p

July 9, 2007  01:41 PM ET

The Dodgers should trade for Contreras (he'll pitch better in the NL and in a pitcher's park, Dodger Stadium) for Kemp, Ethier, or Abreu. The Dodgers won' hold on to all three of them when this is one of their best chances of going to the World Series with the Cardinals and Mets struggling.

July 9, 2007  02:40 PM ET

pinstrips213 i dont remember the mets struggling i mean there still in first place in their division. i love to see kenny williams give people his garbage for top propects or good players hes brillient when it goes to making trades.

July 9, 2007  02:51 PM ET

pinstripes, you must never see these guys play to think this is a fair trade. Kemp and Ethier are the new outfield that will be playing for years, Abreu is Kent's replacement next year. If Colletti made this trade he would be run out of town. The White Sox could maybe see a couple of middle prospects, but not next years starters, no way. I'd rather see them go with what they have than trade any of those guys...

July 9, 2007  03:29 PM ET

Wow a story about the White Sox and a possible trade. Fascinating, thanks for the 411.

Great job, SI !!!!!!!!!!!
