Jones: Braves need starting pitcher

His Braves teammates say they're confident that sore-shouldered ace John Smoltz will be healthy after the All-Star break, but some hope the front office is successful in pursuit of another quality starter through a trade. "I hope they get something done," center fielder Andruw Jones said Sunday. "It most definitely would help us. To get another starter would give us a better chance to compete against the other top teams in our division." There are few other available starters on the trade market, but the Braves will keep talking to teams and hope more pitchers become available before the July 31 trade deadline.

You know, the Braves would compete better also is Andruw played like it was his contract season.

July 9, 2007  09:04 AM ET

If Jones wants the team to trade for more talent he should sign a new dseal for less and free up some cap room. if not he is all talk.

July 9, 2007  09:29 AM ET

Yeah, they also need a center fielder who can hit over .200. But....he is on a pace to drive in around 100 RBI's, which only shows how over-rated a stat RBI's are.

Jones still covers a lot of ground, has a magnetized glove, and drives in runs.

It must be noted, however, that he cannot dance, and has chronic bouts of batter's box dementia.

July 9, 2007  11:29 AM ET

I think the Braves are gonna be one less Jones next year

July 9, 2007  11:47 AM ET

Jones will feel better after getting in on some lesbian action at the Atlanta Gold Club

July 9, 2007  11:55 AM ET

It would help the braves if you'd start hitting too buddy.

July 9, 2007  12:01 PM ET

he's right, the Braves do need another starting pitcher, but it would be nice if the guy who is supossed to be your cleanup hitter posting an average better than .200

July 9, 2007  12:03 PM ET

jones is right and i think he realizes that where his season has gone may have cost him some money so hes thinking about staying in atlanta. and now that hes gotten hot a little bit the braves should win the division if they get a pitcher.

July 9, 2007  12:14 PM ET

Who is out there that is at least halfway decent though?

July 9, 2007  12:17 PM ET

Who's the moron who posted about cap room? There is no cap in baseball. Jones should be traded for pitching.

July 9, 2007  12:34 PM ET

I like that one...
Trade him for the pitching..ha!

July 9, 2007  12:37 PM ET

Andruw is right the Braves should seek a starting pitcher and he (Andruw) would be the perfect piece of the puzzle to get that... but wait Andruw wants a pitcher however he thinks he can turn it around in Atlanta. If the Braves even remotely tried to trade Andruw he would whine & moan about how he has 10-5 rights & how he would reject a trade. If the Braves had some leverage like they could force him to be traded then maybe that would have lite a fire under his (butt), but no such luck. The starting pitcher that the Braves really need is Mike Hampton oops one of the biggest busts on contracts ever is out b/c steroids are out of his regiment. Worst MLB FA signings ever (Pavano, Burnett, Hampton, K.Brown, J Giambi, Zito).

July 9, 2007  12:59 PM ET

Andruw has one down year and here comes hecklers. Give me break!! Andruw will come around and when he does Atlanta will still need a stronger pitching rotation. I say trade Harris or Diaz.

July 9, 2007  01:01 PM ET

He put his butt on the line by opening his mouth in the press. That's a guy who cares about his team.

July 9, 2007  01:08 PM ET

Well, he will come arond in the second half..but if we dont get pitching then we are still out of the division chase..

July 9, 2007  01:28 PM ET

The Braves might do some damage if they had a Centerfielder who could at least bat his weight.

July 9, 2007  01:33 PM ET

Maybe if the Braves offer Salty they could get a pitcher and a bat. Maybe Matt Morris and Pedro Feliz (to play first) from the Giants.

July 9, 2007  02:01 PM ET

Well, if ever there was an opportunity to trade for Dontrelle Willis, the Braves do have the ideal calling card in Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who is not only a local boy from south Florida, but is the catcher the Marlins will need for the not-too-distant future.

If there was a Saltalamacchia, perhaps Chuck James, and an outfield prospect offered for Willis, I don't think there's any question that Larry Beinfest would seriously mull over that offer.

Now, whether Willis is worth that right now, well...:-p

Andruw just needs to shut and play he as no right to talk because he been playing poorly this season
