Bruins, Kessell at impasse?

07:00 AM ET 09.08 | Opening Night now slightly more than three weeks away, speedy Bruins winger Phil Kessel remains without a contract, putting into doubt his statement last month that he would have a new deal in place by the start of the 2009-10 season. The Bruins, with some $55 million committed for next season, have tried to convince Kessel to sign a deal that would increase the payroll to around $59 million, forcing Peter Chiarelli to ditch a roster player in the minors or offload salary via trade. But thus far none of Boston's offers has been to Kessel's liking.

Bob McKenzie reported Saturday night that the Leafs could be looking to sign Phil to an offer sheet..... ugh. The B's gotta get something for him, if he's on his way outta town....

They've been at an impasse since June. Let someone sign him, he seems to be the American version of Nikolai Zherdev anyway.

September 8, 2009  08:29 AM ET

Hahahahahahahaha. Really? I am pretty sure they have been at an impase since the end of last season.

September 8, 2009  10:13 AM ET

Enough with the Kessel T&Rs.
Also, they spelled Kessel wrong in the title, only one "L"

September 8, 2009  10:28 AM ET

And ... in other news, Heatley may decide that Ottawa .... Oh! Wait! Never mind!

16 more days. 16 more days. 16 more days.

I think it is Boston's best interest if T.O signs Kessel to an offer sheet. Kessel will only sign the offer if it above $4mill per. Doesn't that secure the Bruins a first, second, and third rounder? The Leafs first rounder in 2010 will be a top ten pick if not better. Also, this way Boston doesn't have to dump salary by trading away a guy like Savard, Bergeron, or Sturm.

It seems like he's loading up for an offer sheet, yes, but wasnt he that hates offer sheets with a passion? He'd be a hypocrite if he were to do just that. The moral of the story? Dont burn your bridges.

I've also read that Nashville and New York are interested in Kessel. I'd take a Jordin Tootoo and Colin Wilson for Kessel.

To me thats a last ditch scenario.

True! But it is not in T.O's or any other team's best interest to give up that many draft picks for Kessel unless they're desperate! Like Kevin Lowe was when he signed Dustin Penner. The price is simply too high. The Bruins will wait for the right trade offer which, ironically, may include that many draft picks.

Burke is a big hypocrite, no denying that. He got in the biggest fight ever with Kevin Lowe, and wouldn't do a deal with Edmonton because of that.

If the Leafs get Kessel and have a scorer, they may make the playoffs, and for sure wont get a top 10 pick. They got a stacked D, solid goaltending, and an okay offense.

I hope the Leafs do an offer sheet that is front loaded. Then you can afford him this year, but his contract is cheap in the future and saves you cap space, and also the Bruins can't afford him. Something like $10 million this season, then 8, 6, 4, 4, 2, 1. Then it is a 7 year 35 million.

Reality check Kessel moves them from like 12-13 in the East to 10-11 Face it they will not make the pplayoffs till earliest next year ....but they will be a hell of a lot more fun to watch

The Leafs don't have anything to offer. That's a team full of bodies that are lucky to even be in the NHL. Yet another year out of the playoffs for the sad-sack Leafs.
The Bruins are better off having the little prima-donna sit out the season, than make a desperate trade with a lousy team

LMFAO!!!!!!!!
You Leaf fans are nothing if not blindly optimistic.
Reality check...lousy D, mediocre goaltending, no offense.

Granted when Burke had the Ducks, he used much the same strategy to build his team. A strong goaltender with a pretty decent backup, gritty talented defensemen, but the one thing that Anaheim had that T.O. doesn't is point producing forwards. If Kessel joins the leafs this season and scores some goals, it isn't ridiculous to think we can finish 8th or 7th. The majority of the games they lost last season were pretty close games anyway, being seperated by one goal, sometimes 2 goals. Picking up Kessel would be huge for the leafs, and very influential on whether or not they make the playoffs. Let us not forget, Anaheim WON a cup defensively. Needless to say, T.O. can make the playoffs defensively. That being said, if we don't get Kessel, we're in a good position to have an incredible team the following season with all those picks.

Kessel is a restricted free agent... if the Leaf's do sign him to an offer then the bruins ahve the option to match. If they don't they get draft picks from the leafs as compensation... Probably better picks then they would get in a straight up trade.

The Bruins wish they could get rid of Bergeron and keep Kessel, but no one wants to pick up the big contract he has for a 3rd line center with cronic injuries. Savard isn't going anywhere, he loves playing for the black and gold and will be resigned by the end of the season.

In Toronto's defense, they were 12 points off the 8th spot with terrible goaltending. Thats 6 wins shy. IMO with average goaltending they do have a shot at the play-offs.
