Knicks offering LeBron own cable channel?

The latest LeBron to the Knicks rumor I've heard is that Cablevision - which owns the Knicks but not the Daily News - will circumvent the salary cap by giving LeBron his own channel. I don't know exactly how that will work but that's what I've heard. As of today, I say there is a 90 percent chance LeBron is coming to New York ... and 100 percent chance that I won't be watching the LeBron channel.

"As of today, I say there is a 90 percent chance LeBron is coming to New York ..."

Where do they come up with this crap?

I'm not saying he won't end up a member of the Knicks (who knows?), but a 90% chance? Come on... I doubt even LeBron knows at this point which team he's leaning towards...

I've heard of some strange ways to get people to come to you, but this one's way at the top.

I'd have figured Shaq would have bit this one first, but he was offered a TV show already...

Any bum can get a 3:00AM slot on a cable network. Doesn't seem like much of an incentive to me.

You got that right

This may soon become the new AI/Favre/Heatley thread-du-joir... Gotta give the kid credit, though. He's playing this very close to the vest.

I am wondering how this will work. Usually if another channel gets added all subscribers pay for it. How will Cablevision subscribers feel about contributing a couple of dollars a month for Lebron.

September 10, 2009  07:59 AM ET

Maybe LeBron should concentrate on winning a championship.

September 10, 2009  08:30 AM ET

a lebron channel will consist of lebron talking about lebron featuring commericials with lebron selling lebron endorsed products.

September 10, 2009  08:32 AM ET

Just what we need... a basketball player who knows nothing about TV with his own station.

True, but not just any bum will be paid multimillions of dollars to have said time slot. I'm not saying this is accurate or inaccurate, but what I am saying is as the adage goes "there is more than one way to skin a cat". If there is a shady way to increase LeBron's pay separate and apart from the salary cap, it can be done in NY. We wrote the book on shadiness.

He will. Once he gets settled in in MSG.

September 10, 2009  08:40 AM ET

So if he comes to New York, I got to pay for another channel? So I as a Cablevision subscriber got to pay for the LBJ 23 Channel? GTFOH!!

Seriously, this rumor has me laughing harder than all hell. It's a funny idea, but it's unlikely.

Please don't missthe point. If this is true, knowing something about TV is irrelevant. It won't matter if 100 million people watch his channel or 1/2 of a guy who has had the bottom half of his body aputated just below the rib cage and kept alive by a respirator and around the clock blood transfusions. LeBron will still draw a staggering salary from it thereby indrectly increasing his salary many times over.

I am a die hard Knicks fan and even I think (again if there is any truth to this whatsoever)
this is bad for basketball in particular, and for pro sports in general. However, with that said, this is a prime example of what can be done in a place as rich and resourceful as NY that cannot be matched in any way, shape or form in some hollow like Cleveland.

Man this dudes head doesn't need to get any bigger... someone pop it so he come back to earth and go back to being just a basketball player

They won't have to match that. I have a very hard time believing that the NBA is going to sit by and watch teams start circumventing the salary cap by using some sort of bartering system. This thing will be dead before it gets started. If they allow this then what will be next? Owners giving players fake jobs to pay money outside the NBA?

Mark Cuban to Dirk
Cuban: Hey Dirk, I want to be the NYY of the NBA. How about I pay you to be the CEO of Dallas Gumball Inc. and I pay you 10mil a year there and less for your play on the court?
Dirk: Sure! What do I have to do?
Cuban: That's the beauty of it. I'll call you once a month and ask you if you think we should stay open. As CEO you simply say, "yes" and we are in business. It's that simple. These NBA people won't have a clue as to what is going on...

Money Talks?? Is a cable channel worth about $20 million more on a max deal and a chance to win a championship now. That's what the Cavs can offer. Besides Lebron can have the city of Cleveland, akron and all points in between if he stays. Face it, he is not going to New York.
