UMass welcoming back Calipari?

07:07 AM ET 09.11 | There are bad ideas and then there are really bad ideas. Inviting John Calipari to the UMass Club in downtown Boston to "Celebrate UMass Basketball" is a really bad idea. Coach Cal took UMass to the Final Four in 1996, but later we found out that Marcus Camby already had turned professional while playing for the Minutemen. So the whole thing was erased by the NCAA. Officially speaking, it never happened. Calipari, naturally, fled Amherst before the NCAA posse arrived and already was making millions as coach of the New Jersey Nets by the time the sanctions were imposed. Despite all of this, UMass chooses to celebrate Calipari and his sorry legacy. Calipari is a member in good standing of the UMass Athletic Hall of Fame.

This guy is SLEEEEEEEZY.

September 11, 2009  08:31 AM ET

He is sleazy, and he has done it again at Memphis, and will at UK

September 11, 2009  08:35 AM ET

I keep telling my UK friends he's nothing but trouble. All they see is the titles he's gonna win them....and then subsequently get taken away.

they are delusional. What proof do they have that Calipari can win a championship? He couldn't even get Memphis to practice freethrows.

What is the deal with all this Calipari hate? I am a diehard Spartan. If, after the Final Four games, the final is MIchigan State and Kentucky, I am already celebrating the National Title because, as was said, if Kentucky wins, it will get taken away a couple years later and MSU will be the National champs. Its a beautiful thing.

Calipari is one shady motherflower.

September 11, 2009  09:40 AM ET

Calipari played footsie with NC State after Sendek couldn't take the heat anymore, but ultimately decided he couldn't compete year-in and year-out with Roy Williams and Coach K. I was actually glad. Sidney Lowe's shortcomings aside, Calipari is used-car salesman and nothing but trouble in the long term. Sleep well, KY fans, knowing that even if he does deliver a title, it might be taken away in a year or two or three. I'd rather have no titles and no Final Fours than to have one and see it yanked by the NCAA.

Two things.

1. How dare you insult Used Car salesmen, some of those people have ethics.

2. You said "...it might be taken away in a year or two." No might about it. It will be taken away in a year or two.

I would add more, but my cell is ringing. I think its time for me to take the SAT for one of Calipari's recruits. Wish me luck!!!!

At least Pitino keeps his business in restaurants!

Nothin' but net.

The only reason men like Calipari are the way they are is because there are schools like UMass and Kentucky and a lot of others who are the way they are..You cannot have one without the other..

Hey 50year--
Do you give the Orange any chance against Penn State this weekend? I think Doug Marrone is a great coach who will have them on the right track soon, but I'm not sure how quickly the results of his efforts will be evident on the scoreboard.

Just win baby.

Nope. Zero. I think he will be a great coach, and he wants to be there..Just glad they put up a good show against the gophers. That is a big step foward..You got to like Paulus though, too bad he only has one year.

I will never understand this outrage against a coach whose PLAYER violates the rules. Nothing ever happens to the player but the outrage is against the coach (as if the coach had set up the whole thing). Well, Obama appointed Van Jones who resigned in shame. So Obama should resign also for his "sorry legacy". HUH?!! Oh, and before you lecture me on the ethics of college athletics, consider your silence about athletes graduating without the ability to read or write properly, or about colleges making millions from these "student athletes". I think your outrage is sorely misplaced and hypochritical.

I mean the sleazy kind of used-car salesmen...sorry to generalize like that...LOL

September 11, 2009  02:06 PM ET

Of course. Colleges don't care about anything but publicity.

Take Tim Allen of Home Improvement fame as an example. When he was a student at WMU, he used to sell cocaine on campus. He got caught by the cops, was imprisoned, where he snitched his way to a better sentence, and was expelled from WMU.

If you go to the Bernhard Center TODAY and look at the "Wall of Fame" talking about notable former Broncos, you'll see Old Timmy there.......

And John Saunders barely gets mentioned around there.

Wow. You're an idiot.
