Will Gretzky show up for Coyotes camp?

08:39 AM ET 09.12 | The Phoenix Coyotes will open training camp this morning. Whether Wayne Gretzky, the team's current coach and the icon once counted on to sell the sport in the desert, will be there is a mystery. A team official attending the proceedings admitted he had no clue whether the Great One will be at Jobing.com Arena in suburban Glendale this morning for medicals. Another said he's still part of the team and will be there for camp. Gretzky's status became a live issue during yesterday's court proceedings when Judge Redfield T. Baum asked openly whether Gretzky was still the coach.

There they go with that 'Angry Wayne' picture again.

And does the coach have to show up for medicals? I thought doctors did that stuff....

A training camp? The Coyotes will have a training camp? And, what name will they train under? Poison dwarves? Bald Seals? Wayners?

I think he's helping out with the "turn your head and cough" examination this year. Bettmen is helping with the players prostate exams. You guys over forty know what I'm talking about.

Must you be over 40 to enjoy one of those? Not fair! :-)

I don't care what he does but I hope his gorgeous gambler of a wife meets me for a romp !!! I ''bet" she will.

I think the NHL needs Bettman and "Buzz" Hargrove at the getalifebasille.com arena in clown suits dancing the Irish Jig, eh??

September 12, 2009  01:14 PM ET

I say Gretzky tells the NHL and "The Dwarf" to stick it where the sun don't shine. Nothing better than The Great One going public and telling the whole world that Bettman's an idiot and he won't supprt the NHL until the poison dwarf is gone. C'mon Gretz grow a set and let him have it.

99's a bad coach. Thats the bottom line. Had he been hired anywhere else, he wouldve been fired a long time ago. Not unless Phoenix's plan was to tank it on purpose.

September 12, 2009  01:40 PM ET

This is why owners hate to hire icons to run their teams or coach them. They almost never translate their skills and strat to their players. Jordan has been the same misearable failure as Gretz. It's one of the major reasons Donny Baseball didn't get hired by the yankees. Who wants to be the one to fire these guys ? Time for teams to realize that just because you have a bust or plaque doesn't mean you can coach or be an exec. It's not the same skill set. Now if they hire these guys for publicity and to get recognition for their franchise...now that's another story.

Fire him i heard Derrick Morris complain that he changed the system to much in PHX.

September 12, 2009  01:45 PM ET

Guys like Gretz defy the natural checks and balances in an organization. Who feels qualified enough to question his decision making process or strategy, even when you know it's not working ? It's a crappy situation.

True enough I'm afraid.
But, as part owner of the team, its kind of hard to fire him.
