NFC GM: Crabtree's diva act was a warning

On the heels of John York's offer Michael Crabtree, Yahoo! Sports reached out to highly placed personnel men from seven NFL teams, polling them on whether they'd support the establishment of draft pick protection. The answer? A resounding no, with all seven men coming out strongly against the idea. An NFC G.M. said the Niners simply should have known better given Crabtree's diva act leading up to the draft and the history of contentious negotiations in which his agent, Eugene Parker, has been involved.

NFL teams are notorious for evaluating everything about a player before they draft him. It also sounds like a lot of teams knew of Crabtree's act long before he was drafted, so this problem falls squarely on the shoulders of the 49ers for not doing their homework.

When the Raiders passed on him, that should have sent a huge message to the rest of the league.

Kick him right in the rear end!!

Or he could be sent to Oakland for the resr of his career!

Caveat emptor, 49ers.

I say beat up the Agent.

Also notorious for gathering all the information and then overlook it and still pick the guy.

There is that, too. It's pretty amazing how they fell in love with this guy, maybe they figured that at #10, it would be a steal.

Man this guy is really hurting himself only if he sit's out a year it's pretty much over he will really fall in next year's draft he needs to talk to Mike Williams you see where it got him oe maybe talk to Matt L. of Arizona if he hadn't of taken ballroom dancing he probably would have went #1 to SF instead he went 10 to Arizona and is not even starting. Just sign and play dude if you are that good you'll get paid.

True.

Lou Holtz told him best.... He should've done his own contract negotiations... If the 9'ers would have offered him 40 mill on his own, he then could've sought an agent and promised the agent half of anything he could get over 40 million.

I have a feeling that if he signs soon, he'll be out for the season with a leg injury the first week back. I'm just guessing he hasn't been practicing much, nor has he been in any real weight room training like you would be for an NFL season.

Who wrote that article? A 4th grader? Punctuation please.

Agreed, except for the "message" that the league should have gotten when the Raiders passed on him. Al Davis has always been enfatuated with SPEED and the long ball. Haward-Bay's 40 time is why they passed on Crabtree, not Crabtree's prima donna attitude. If ANY other team had passed on Crabtree and taken another WR as the Raiders did, then yes I think the other teams would have taken notice. But no one really puts a lot of stock in anything Al Davis does these days. Basically Davis got lucky by making the right decision for the wrong reason....

Man, does Jerry Jones look like a friggin cadaver or what?

September 18, 2009  07:59 AM ET

All the worst scenarios surrounding Crabby have occurred but I don't see how the 9ers could have passed on the value at #10. Not the 1st-1st round pick to be a bust and he won't be the last. I think they(9ers) should just move on, that way at least they won't be out any money and they will do a more thorough researching of their next 1st round pick. Think Vick, Leaf, Goulston, Ricky Williams etc. who cost their original teams tons of money for which they never produced the value.

September 18, 2009  08:06 AM ET

He and his agent have their (high) heels dug in...I agree that 9ers should continue without him at this point. Let him play videogames for a year and see who what league he'll be in next year.

OK, I'll file the fact that Davis didn't sign him under:

This dude better put up some serious numbers when he does finally get onto the field. I will be anxiously awaiting for the first time he blown up by somebody. Does this guy think he's bigger than the game of football?
