Rickey wants to play for A's

How serious is Rickey Henderson about a proper playing farewell in baseball? He said Sunday he'd not only push back his inevitable Cooperstown induction to get it, he'd forfeit the Hall of Fame entirely for one last fling. He'd like to play the entire month of September for Oakland ... or just sit on the bench as a member of the team, if that's the way the A's want it.

You're done Ricky. Just accept it.

I love Rickey Henderson, one of my favorite players of all time, but D@MN, GIVE IT UP Buddy..!!!!!

July 9, 2007  11:31 AM ET

Know when to say when. Rickey your when was a long time ago.

July 9, 2007  11:31 AM ET

It is nobody's business but his own what he decides to do with his career. If the thinks he can still play and a team wants to take him on I see no reason for him not to try. It isn't as if we are talking about a boxer than can hardly speak after excessive head unjuries trying to fight.

TODAY I AM THE GREATEST

July 9, 2007  11:34 AM ET

Hey, Rickey can still play. Hell, he'd make the Giants squad with their sorry lineup of hitters right now.

July 9, 2007  11:37 AM ET

MAYBE THE BOOS CAN SIGN HIM SINCE THEY ARE SO DESPERATE TO WIN!!

July 9, 2007  11:46 AM ET

He will be starting in centerfield for the Yankees in '08! Or maybe by Thursday!

July 9, 2007  11:54 AM ET

He's kept himself in shape, why not let the guy sit on the bench. I mean that is if they really don't need someone else playing at that spot. If the A's are out of it at that point, let him do it. Just let him hit like once or twice, use him as a pinch runner otherwise.

July 9, 2007  11:55 AM ET

That's the problem BoSoxFan, he's made it known the last couple of years that he'd like to play in the Majors, but nobody wants him.

July 9, 2007  12:11 PM ET

How old is that picture? He's got like an MC Hammer, late eighties rapper thing going on in.

July 9, 2007  12:15 PM ET

Nobody can tell him when to quit, except him. If he wants to play, he should be able to play. If he's not good enough, so be it. I hate seeing idiots posting people should retire. Why? So they can sit on their butts like you guys and complain about people needing to retire?

July 9, 2007  12:23 PM ET

He's not good enough, breakingbones. That's just it. No one wants him. It's not like this desire to return to the MLB is new. Ricky is always talking about playing.

July 9, 2007  12:29 PM ET

Milton Bradley could have helped the A's more than Rickey can. Just b/c someone is dumb enough to pay Roger more than he is worth, doesn't mean every player 40+ can still play. Julio Franco should probably hang it up, R Johnson should do it real soon, Ruben Sierra seems to have finally hung it up. After Sammy strong yr this yr does anyone think that Rafael Palmiero might try & come back next yr?? Oil Can Boyd looks as if he has finally given it up, even Jose Canseco has or the "blackball" has kept him from it. Anyway the book tour has been doing good for Jose of late.

July 9, 2007  12:32 PM ET

I don't believe that Rickey Henderson was that great of a teammate as he ended his career having an attitude & a sense of entitlement not exactly a veteran influence on a young team in Oakland. Maybe the A's sign Rickey to a one-day contract & then he retires w/the team as long as Rickey doesn't want max-dollars for that one day or a pro-rated contract similar to Clemens just for the day!! ha.

July 9, 2007  12:35 PM ET

Bring him back when the rosters expand for a day... Especially if the A's are out of the playoff chase by then.

July 9, 2007  12:44 PM ET

Rickey was amazing in his prime. Probably the best base stealer and one of the best lead off hitters the game will ever see. He was a living highlight reel with his base stealing. There comes a time when you need to set off into the sunset. There is nothing worse then an embarassing ending to a career. If he still has it more power to him but don't tarnish the rep. you built.

July 9, 2007  12:58 PM ET

I'd love to see him brought in during September call-ups as a pinch-runner. Let the Oakland faithful give him the grand, official send-off he deserves with a 2-minute standing O. Has a nice finality to it. Maybe he'll be pumped up enough to steal base 1,407.

July 9, 2007  01:03 PM ET

SO DO I RICKY....WE SHOULD GO PLAY TOGETHER

July 9, 2007  01:17 PM ET

I think I speak for all A's fans when I say:

WE DON"T WANT HIM
