After learning that Arco Arena is considered unsuitable to host a major college basketball tournament, Mayor Kevin Johnson said Tuesday that Sacramento could lose the Kings if efforts for a new arena aren't stepped up. The mayor made his statements after finding out the NCAA had bypassed Sacramento's bid to host the regional round of the men's basketball tournament. Arco Arena has hosted the money-making event four times since 1994.

zzzzzzzzzzzzz - Another reason to milk money from the tax payers...!!

September 23, 2009  08:54 AM ET

What if the Kings move to Seattle...OKC vs SEA would be a heck of a game and not because of the players!

How is it all of a sudden 'unsuitable' for the NCAA
but it can support an NBA team ?

Bottom line is with CA bankrupt - there is NO REASON
they should be investing in an 'upgraded' stadium
when they HAVE ONE.....
if they really wanted to do something- how about putting
a decent team together, instead of the embarrassment
they will be throwing out there this year ?

Im with you! how in the Hell are you gonna justify building a new stadium for a team, that probably couldnt beat the college teams that would have been in the tournament that you were trying to host! Get some better players, be competitive, hell get into the playoffs, and increase attendance, then maybe you would be in the position to request something. as it stands, threatening to take the kings from sacramento is like threatening to remove my trash from the trash can......preciate it!

September 23, 2009  09:37 AM ET

why is the arena considered unfit for ncaa tournament games? (that would be nice to know)

what the hell is cal expo? (yes, i googled it, but they should explain it in the article considering that they mention it 15 times!)

kevin johnson is the mayor of sactown? (yes, i know it's not that kj)

who the **** is going to pay for a brand new arena for the worst team in basketball?

September 23, 2009  09:44 AM ET

Too bad... when good, the Kings have a huge Home-court advantage in that barn.

or maybe stern will let sac keep the name and thus, the vegas aces are born!

September 23, 2009  10:49 AM ET

Yea....move em to Vegas, baby! The Maloofs are big-time casino owners here and it woulkd be nice to have a professional sport here even if they do suck, like the KIngs.

September 23, 2009  10:49 AM ET

Bring 'em back to Omaha! Been a Kings fan since they were in Cincinnati, and as a boy I was so excited that my team was going to play in my home town. 'Course, back then we could ride the trolley to the movies for a nickel to catch the latest flicker show. Oh, what fun we had! Until the Kaiser turned it all upside down and plunged the world into war. Wait, what were we talking about? Something about Las Vegas, I think....

September 23, 2009  10:54 AM ET

There are a lot of other reasons for the NCAA to avoid Sacramento including a lack of hotel rooms and a limited schedule of airline flights to the eastern 2/3rds of te country.

A new arena wouldn't change these issues. If Jerry Jones could spend 1.1 Billion to build a football stadium without tax dollars, the Maloofs can do the same thing and spend 5 or 10% that much on a basketball palace that has all the bells and whistles they want.

September 23, 2009  10:58 AM ET

Nobody is worried about the Sacramento Queens arena.

September 23, 2009  10:59 AM ET

Also, the NCAA usually assigns games to cities where this a tremendous local interest in College Hoops.

Look how often Indy, Greensboro and the SEC footprint gets bids. What's in Sacramento? UC Davis and Sac State? The only other D-1 program within 60 miles is the powerhouse at the University of the Pacific.

Sorry Kevin, you are the mayor of a town that has serious gang, traffic, and economic issues not to mention about 25,000 of your residents will be underwater if and when the antiquated levees break. You have bigger things to worry about than an low-end NBA team.

yeah and no, i'd say. i live in albuquerque and we get first two weekends of men's ncaa with some frequency. and the arena in albuquerque can't be as ncaa ready as arco. plus albuquerque certainly is harder to get to than sacto. this place is kind of the end of the earth.

that said, i think you're right re: indy et al get the tourney over and again because of local fan base.
