And he thought Cowboys fans were nasty. Plaxico Burress got a zero's welcome behind bars at Rikers Island, including taunts of "a - - hole!" and "The Giants suck!" according to jail guards. "He was depressed," said one guard from Rikers, where the former Giants superstar spent his first-ever night behind bars. "He was trying to keep to himself, but everyone was yelling at him." "These people got nothing," a second guard explained of the taunts. "What else are they gonna do?"

Raider fan is gonna get you. Look out!

Gonna be a fun couple of years for Plax...

September 24, 2009  06:46 AM ET

lol... Rikers is in NY and these people hate the Giants?

September 24, 2009  06:59 AM ET

Back to back days of sad Plax stories.

Never thought I'd be feeling sorry for the guy, but after yesterday's thread and now this one today, I actually feel bad for the guy.

I know he committed a crime. I also know he hurt no one but himself. 2 years is too long, and this just another example of what's wrong with the American criminal 'justice' system.

And I am by no means a Giants fan.

Welcome to the big house Plaxico.

September 24, 2009  07:09 AM ET

OK T&R guys? Listen up. I was only joking when I said "tune in tomorrow for the next episode" Really just let it go

Just think if was a Cowboys. That "a--hole" taunt would mean something else.

If you lived in NY I guess you would be in tears, because we are being bombarded in all the papers with numerous "Poor Plax being separated from his family" stories.

September 24, 2009  07:19 AM ET

Plax should change his name to Ben Dover. Put all of NY in Rikers, it would be good for the country.

It really is sad.

I know the majority of the people who post here today are going to come riding in on their high horses talking about how "rules are rules" and all that nonsense, but the punishment really didn't fit the crime in this instance.

I could see if it was an OJ deal, and Plax had a (alleged) history of violent crimes. In that case I could see justifying giving him the worst sentence possible to compensate for prior wrongdoings.

But as far as I know, that isn't the case. And for a first time offender to be sentenced to 2 years hard time seems too harsh, in my opinion.

I feel bad for Burress and his family, and really I think all the people that are gloating over his punishment are petty and vindictive.

Why because he didn't hurt anybody but himself? Wrong. Forget about the people he could have injured or killed in the night club, and go a little further. He hurt his employer who paid him enough to live a very comfortable life, and put his co-worker in a bad position by telling him to hide the gun. He also hurt his family, who will have to be without a husband, and father for two years. He will miss the birth of his child, and his wife will be without her husband during the most important time of her life. The law is not too steep in this case, it is too weak in others. I hope he, and others have learned from of this. I also hope this helps him become a better man. A more humble, and responsible man.

Figures the pokey is filled with Giants haters ... that said, even though what he did was stupid and dangerous, putting his life - as well as others - at risk, I still think it's a bit severe to send him to Rikers for what he did. But the law is the law ...

September 24, 2009  07:29 AM ET

NY has really tough gun laws thats why he got 2 years.

The penal code is clear, if you do this crime, this is your punishment. Being rich, and stupid didn't seem to be a mitigating factor, but Plax actually got off easier than one of us.

Yeah, let's punish people for what they COULD have done.

This is crazy.

The penal code is clear. And clearly WAY too harsh in this case.

So, are we to assume from this that the population of Rikers is composed entirely of Jets fans?

FYI, Plax will not be staying at Rikers. It's a "jail." It's a temporary assignment while they figure out which prison he'll be in for the long term.

If anything good can come of this, maybe a few impressionable young men will pick up on the fact that toting a gun around in NYC can get you an all-expenses-paid vacation at a rather unpleasant resort.

This will never happen, but if Plax spent 6 months in jail, and then they let him out to spend the next year or so going to every elementary, middle and high school in the city to talk about his experience, that would be a far better outcome for everyone. He would be the perfect spokesman for the "scared straight" movement.

Good morning Gentleman, I'll venture a guess that this is the hot thread today.

Are saying, it should have taken someone to get hurt for people to understand weapons safety and the laws and regulations when carrying one?

I see nothing wrong with him doing 2 years. The reason it is so steep in NY is b/c of the prior incidents that have resulted in injuries and fatalities. If the weapon is not registered, don't carry it, and he would never be sitting in this situation. Than again, you could always be found guilty and then need to be proven innocent, if that is the justice system you would prefer.

Is this to much of a cheap comment, does it sound like I am angry, or needing to offend you?
