09:04 AM ET 09.27 | The least productive season of Alfonso Soriano's career is over because of knee surgery, but scouts who watched him feel he regressed at age 33. "Still one of the most undisciplined players in the league, especially for a guy who has been around this long," said an NL scout. Soriano hit .241 with 20 homers and 55 RBIs and had some very ugly at-bats.

Almost every Dominican player is undisciplined at the plate. Look at Guerrero, he hacks at almost everything. The difference is that he hits a lot of bad pitches into play. Where as Soriano keeps hacking and looks like a fool. Plus he is a defensive liability.

September 27, 2009  09:24 AM ET

His SO CALLED defense is terrible. Why Jim H. signed a DH is the biggest question.

September 27, 2009  09:48 AM ET

That defensive play completely typified his unprofessionalism and ineptitude. He not played since that game. They chalked it up to injury but it really served more like a final months suspension. There's no getting rid of this guy's contract.

Nice sweeping statement ... Albert Pujols and Miguel Tejada are both hackers ...

Many said the Yanks were crazy for trading away their "future" in that deal.

I'll take that kind of crazy anytime.

yeah- watching him get ABUSED in that last playoff run he
was here for - swinging at balls that went 55 feet every tme-
was plenty for us to know that he was trouble

EXTREMELY talented- offensively- no doubt- but very hard
to watch and DEPEND on

thank god we traded him from texas..

At least ARod was involved so you maybe say "hmmmm...equal value?" But this is the one I like...

***December 8, 2005: Traded by the Texas Rangers to the Washington Nationals for Armando Galarraga, Terrmel Sledge and Brad Wilkerson. ***

Yes, I know free agency was a consideration, but still...Termel Sledge? Really? That's not even 25 cents on the dollar for a guy was .300/30/100. And then the Nats refused to break bank to re-sign him. Proof positive that the numbers do not always tell the story.

Who said the Yankees were crazy for trading him for a 28 year old Alex Rodriguez coming off of an MVP year and two gold gloves?

I have to agree the he is undisciplined and unprofessional, too. In the field, Soriano doesn't hustle, lets too many balls get by him, and won't make the effort to get rid of that silly bunny hop when he catches a fly ball.

At the plate, he refuses to stop swinging at breaking balls way outside the strike zone. Throughout his prolonged slumps, he has refused to try a switch to a lighter bat. Instead, he sticks with the heaviest bat MLB allows. And finally, I suspect that the reason why Piniella continued to use Soriano unsuccessfully as the Cubbie lead off man, was that was what Soriano pressured him to do.

It is not a coincidence the the Cubbies are winning more games now that Soriano and Bradley are out of the line up.

I think K-Mark hit on the most key point. The Cubs are a much better team without Soriano in the lineup. Regardless of ability of the numbers he can put up, he may be one of the least valuable players in the league.

Even if they are better or without him, it doesn't matter. They are stuck with him. They could try to trade him when he has around two years left, but they would end up eating the rest of his contract. Tribune doesn't care. They signed him to help sell the team. Mission accomplished. He is no longer their problem.

September 27, 2009  02:56 PM ET

Classic mistake hitter who kills bad pitching, like 4/5 starters, but can never be the main offense on a championship caliber team, due to better pitching in playoffs. Yanks found that out the hard way which is why they traded him in the first place. Apart from that, is a "me" player who is a liability on D and terrible situational hitter. Not a winning player, regardless of the stats he may put up. Like the anti-Pedroia.

September 27, 2009  04:33 PM ET

Watching him every day is a joke. He never fails to make the wrong play, throw to the wrong base, miss a cutoff man, get picked off, etc. He has a lot of talent, but he's baseball stupid.

September 27, 2009  04:56 PM ET

it is astounding to me that there are still people saying that jim hendry's job is/should be safe. i remember cringing when the cubbies signed fonzie.....and not just b/c of the dollars involved, but b/c i knew we'd be having this conversation........

September 27, 2009  05:03 PM ET

Maybe Soriano is just plain stupido.

Agreed. Also, what's with that little hop in the outfield before he catches fly balls? Thought you were supposed to use the 'crow hop' AFTER you catch the ball?

September 27, 2009  06:59 PM ET

didnt this guy hit like 48 homers in washington or was it texas. He has been a great hitter in the past but he is so undisiplint at the plate evn when he was good. Get him out o chicago hes useless now. And how bout derrik lee hes having a great bounce back year coming off a terrible 08

September 27, 2009  07:33 PM ET

Which is why he should have never been hitting leadoff, Lou "I can't control my players" Pinella. That is one reason why the Cubs stank up the place this season and it took Mr. Pinella half a season to figure that one out...
