Did Romo forget it was fourth down?

06:33 AM ET 10.06 | Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is getting a lot of criticism for throwing consecutive passes to fourth receiver Sam Hurd against Denver standout cornerback Champ Bailey on third and fourth down to end the game in Sunday's 17-10 loss. Is is possible that Romo didn't know it was fourth down? Following the final incomplete pass to end the Cowboys hopes, a video caught on KDFW Fox-4 shows Romo seemingly telling his linemen to line back up. He then flashes three fingers to one of the game officials. After hearing the response, Romo screams and walks off field. If true, Romo apparently forgot about the spike to stop the clock on second down.

Isn't it the responsibility of the coaches as well to know the down and distance? Sounds like this was an issue on many levels, but they are slinging it at Romo. Playcalling comes in from the sidelines, he isn't calling his own plays.

I'm just gonna guess he was told it was 4th down after the play by the coaches. Hey, no one thinks Romo is more overrated than I do, but even this is a stretch.

If he did forget the down, you can add that to his list of recent shortcomings. His lack of pocket presence seemed obvious on Sunday, like he loses track of time and awareness back there. He also threw a lot of medicine balls out there, something he didn't use to do. It looks like he stopped progressing overall and started regressing. The coaching staff deserves some of the blame for that.

The fourth down call also sucked. Why not try pounding the ball in or run a QB draw. Fourth down from the 2 with 5 seconds to go, you can try a run. It won't matter if it fails, same as a pass.

Soooo now we got a story that Romo can't count to four????? Really? Hell if people thought McNabb was a dummy for not knowing a game could end in a tie, this should make for a great day of Romo bashing

Forgetting the down in the last seconds of a game doesn't compare to the level of ignorance it takes to not knowing a game can end in a tie. One happens in the heat of the moment, the other shows you don't a lot about game management. I agree with you though, it won't put a dent in the Romo bashing that will take place here. I put the over/under comment count at 3,700.

He had two end zone plays, I don't think forgetting downs is what killed him.

His former girlfriend couldn't count to two without unbuttoning her blouse.

how does it matter if he doesn't know the down? he's not calling the plays. This is on the Offensive Coordinator for calling 2 passing plays yards from the end zone.

The cherry on top of a completely awful 2nd half of football. Look at the replays - Austin was open both times on the left side.

But only 3 receivers out in patterns? Bennett on the sidelines & Witten blocking? Sorry - this is another indictment of the Red-Headed genius and his "scheme". Added to Romo's "regression (obvious) and Phillips' "Sun is shining - birds are singing" attitude after losses, this team is a mess. Not of Raiders quality, but it's trending that direction.

Maybe he thought he was in the UFL. Who knows, maybe they use 5 downs.

He could move to Canada where he only has to count to three, eh?

After the third down pass it should have been first down for pass interference in the endzone. I mean how as an official do you let a cornerback wrap his arm around the receivers waist and pull off balance. Then on the very next play he does the same thing and there is no call. If I were a Cowboys fan, after those two missed calls and the phantom holding on the Tashard Choice run, I would be livid. This years officiating is terrible.

Romo = overrated piece of crap. Jerry builds a billion dollar stadium and puts a 10 cent coach and QB combo inside for his fans. If you're a Cowboys fan after that Denver debacle, you should probably be asking yourself how serious Jerry really is about winning.

October 6, 2009  07:36 AM ET

Yeah, he forgot.

October 6, 2009  07:40 AM ET

isnt it possible the other receivers weren't open at all so he went to that receiver?

Keeping Philips as coach this year only helps fuel your argument.
