Miller luring Xavier recruits to 'Zona

Rod Odom is the latest Xavier target to wind up with Sean Miller at Arizona, as did freshmen Kyryl Natyazhko and Kevin Parrom last spring, having established a long-term relationship with Miller when he spent his sophomore year spring break checking out the Musketeer program. Odom ultimately chose Arizona over Vanderbilt, Boston College, West Virginia and another long-time suitor, Harvard.

Think I would rather be at the X...seen how many of those guys make it at the next level?

For sure. And quite honestly its probably a better program than Arizona. That may chance but X has been something special last few years. Not to mention the quality of coaches. Gillen, Prosser, Matta, and now Miller.

Actually, Miller uses this pic on his holiday greeting cards.

AZ>Xavier easily, especially now that we have the coach that has made them relevant the last 5 years

Seriously?! Are you kidding? Other than David West and maybe James Posey who else has made it in the NBA? Maybe I misread your post. Arizona has been a hotbed of budding NBA talent for years and even though we've been on the decline we've still been churing out draft picks. The only reason we've been on a downward slope is because of the uncertainty at head coach but now that that's solved look out. The tide is definately turning.Remember these words.

No offense bigcity but i'm aware of the aformentioned list but i only listed the players that were relevant in the NBA. I'm at work so don't have time to list all the Arizona alumni in the NBA but if i'm not mistaken we have the most NBA players drafted since 1988 out of EVERY school.

I'm well aware of that list but with all due respect bigcity, I only listed the players that are relevant in the NBA. I'm at work so I don't have time to list the myriad different U of A players in the Association but if i'm not mistaken we have the most drafted AZ alumni since 1988.

Thanks jym! Sorry for the double post.

October 8, 2009  01:00 PM ET

Don't forget about Chase Budinger and Jordan Hill

October 8, 2009  03:01 PM ET

90 % of that Arizona list is comprised of nothing more than D League players...Miles Simon's pro career was stellar. And the fact remains that Xavier hasn't missed a beat on the recruiting trail for 2010. 4 studs already in the books. And Shank, it is a reach to imply that Miller built this program. He was a good coach who kept it moving in the right direction, as Chris Mack will continue to do.

October 8, 2009  09:18 PM ET

Bob Gun's got a great point...the article itself is somewhat irrelevant, as is the conversation about where Odom would rather play, because Xavier had no scholarship to give him. In fact, when they got a verbal from Justin Martin back in August it made them 1 scholarship heavy for the 2010-2011 season so they're going to have to pull a scholarship from someone at the end of next season (I'd imagine its going to be Joe Hughes). I'm sure Odom will be a good player and would have been a nice addition to Xavier's class but its not as though Odom going to Az came at Xavier's expense - their recruiting for that class finished 2 months ago.

October 8, 2009  09:20 PM ET

comparing Xavier to Arizona is like comparing actresses Rosie O'donnel to Meryl Streep. Streep is Arizona. Or a Ford Escort to a Cadillac(Arizona). Can't compare Arizona has deep resources and X struggles.

October 8, 2009  10:38 PM ET

Not to mention that Arizona has been to the NCAA tournament the last 25 years in a row. I don't think Xavier has been to the NCAA tournament anywhere near as long. You don't go there for that long unless you have a very strong and very good, well established program. One of the first commentators knocked Arizona for (over the last few years) not having that good a program while Xavier flourished....In fact, under two interim coaches for a year apiece, and with players and committments leaving, Arizona STILL made the tournament; Sweet 16 last year. As recently as 2001, they were in the title game; as recently as 2005 they were playing to go to the Final Four. They had two players taken in the NBA draft just last year. Yes, they'll struggle a little this year; but the Cats have bottomed out (at a higher level than some teams ever get) and will be back in the top 10 in a few short years.

I wish nothing but the best for Miller at Arizona. However, if I were an Arizona Wildcat fan, I would not boast too loudly yet about stealing the next up and coming coach from Xavier. The truth is, none of our last three coaches that moved up the college basketball food chain have enjoyed the same success at their next stop relative to their time spent at XU, as evidenced by their winning percentages below:

Gillen: 0.729 at Xavier; 0.565 at Providence and Virginia
Prosser: 0.695 at Xavier; 0.649 at Wake Forest
Matta: 0.772 at Xavier; 0.734 at Ohio State
Miller: 0.705 at Xavier

The combined winning percentage of the ten most recent Pac-10 champions: 0.843. Good luck.

Thats a nice little stat there JD, but you have to consider where they went. Who would expect to win the same amount of games going from the A-10 to the powerhouse conferences of the Big-10 and the ACC. And didn't Matta take OSU to a championship game?? I could be wrong but i'm pretty sure he was there with Oden and Conly Jr. Nobody expects Miller to make UofA a top 10 team next year, we expect them to be just as competitive as we have always been and we expect another bid to the Big Dance.

Bop Gun, I agree that Miller didn't build Xaviers program, but a couple of elite 8 visits is nothing to sneeze at. If all he did was continue on the tradition at X why cant UofA fans expect the same at AZ who's tradition is a little more prominent than Xaviers. The guy pulled a top 15 class AFTER the signing period. As far as the alumni go, how is Miles Simon the one name you pick out of that list. How about, Kerr, Elliot, Walton, Bucheler and Bison Dele. (all have rings) We have more all-stars than Xavier has players in the NBA. To compare the NBA talent from the 2 schools is laughable

October 9, 2009  07:13 AM ET

Guys, elevate the conversation. AZ has a longer, greater tradition. But X has enjoyed much recent success and respect. Give both schools credit -- no need to trash either. Sean was known as a high character coach at X, and was praised for the "nobility" with which he left, so we're surprised that he raided the X program. It's out of character for him.
