Pollard: Nothing improper about KU car sale

A 1997 Chevy Tahoe driven by Kansas sophomore forward Markieff Morris during a Sept. 13 car accident was sold to teammate Tyshawn Taylor by Scot Pollard in August, Pollard said Wednesday. Questions arose about the Tahoe's owner and whether there could be a possibility of improper benefits, because the police report from the accident, in which Morris was cited for an improper lane change, stated the car was registered to Pollard, a former KU and NBA player who lives in Lawrence. Pollard said Taylor had not yet transferred the car to his name at the time of the accident.

Yea, 12 year old clunkers are the payoffs college ballers are looking for.

I don't think this a big deal other than everyone is keeping a close eye on KU now since the football and basketball have been practicing for MMA at various locations on the campus.

OK, I understand the fighting and DUI threads, but this one is pretty weak. Hope this crap dies down before the season starts.

Did you guys who commented read the story. It's pretty clear that Pollard was providing free use of one of his cars to the player. Stop enabling this behavior with ridiculous explanations.

Just reading the headlines I was expecting the kid might be driving a brand new BMW or Mercedes. Who on earth cares about a 1997 Chevy Tahoe?

Sorry Herb, clearly it's you who either hasn't read the story or lacks basic reading comprehension skills. Pollard sold the vehicle, in a completely above-board transaction (which, elsewhere, Pollard explained was specifically vetted by the Athletic Department to make sure there was nothing improper happening) to Tyshawn Taylor in August. Taylor probably actually paid more than he'd have paid to buy the same car from a random private individual, because the price had to be based on Blue Book valuation (rather than the usually lower private seller price), in order to pass muster with the Athletic Department. Kansas law allows 30 days to transfer title of a car (and the penalty for late transfer is quite small - I know when I was at KU and purchased a used car, I stalled transferring the title beyond the 30 days for cash flow reasons).

Taylor allowed his teammate Morris to drive the car.

Nothing in that sequence constitutes any "improper benefit" or NCAA violation.

If it is a 4 WD, the Private Party Blue Book for the car in excellent condition is 4975 or 4575 in good condition. If it is 2WD it 3390. I used the Lawrence Zip Code 66044 and assume a conservative 120,000 miles on this 12 year old car.

Even after I added a sunroof. Presidium Rims CD changer and Premium Sound, and lowered the mileage to 80K it is still only 5260 car.

This is one I can't get worked up over.
