09:28 AM ET 10.11 | The Brewers are telling teams they don't plan to trade Prince Fielder. They hope to get pitching back in trades for shortstop J.J. Hardy and possibly third base prospect Mat Gamel, a .302 hitter in five minor league systems who has been made expendable by the emergence of Casey McGehee, claimed on waivers from the Cubs last fall.

Smart play, Fielder is an offensive monster. Give him a defensive clinic this off-season and get some real pitching and you might just contend.

"Smart play, Fielder is an offensive monster."

Yeah, but with a frame like his, how long? I'd say move him before he re-ups and you're stuck with the 800 pound gorilla...

They tried to trade him, but no other teams can afford to feed him.

Even though it's only veggies and tofu ... that's a LOT of veggies and tofu!

Who was "made expendable by the emergence of Casey McGehee, claimed on waivers from the Cubs last fall."

Another mistake by Hendry and Cubbie scouts. What a surprise!

I bet the White Sox could put a pretty good package together for him. The Brewers cannot pitch and the Chi Sox just happen to have an abundance of QUALITY starting pitching. Any of the Sox big 4 would be a legitimate number one in the National League. If the Brewers were smart they would shop him for a couple of GOOD young pitchers. But just like everyone else they are in love with the flashy showy long ball. They will be losers forever.

"But just like everyone else they are in love with the flashy showy long ball. They will be losers forever. "

Or because he's under contract for two more seasons and had the best offensive numbers this side of Albert Pujols. They'd never get adequate value for him. Never. This team won 80 games with a AAAA pitching staff half the year. Losers forever? Whatever you want to think. It's not like they won't trade him before he hits free agency if they can't sign him long-term, which with Boras as his agent, they won't be able to.

One more year of trying to make a run with a great 3-4 combo in Fielder and Braun...nothing wrong with that.

The White Sox don't need Fielder. They should hold onto the pitching that you mentioned considering they need as much of it they can get since the players behind them cannot field at all.

They can't trade him to many teams. Bringing in a vegetarian that fat would require an environmental impact report in most cities.

Uh? Wha? If he was under contract for 2 more years, they wouldn't be trying to trade him. He's got one year left, 2010. Then he's a free agent. He'll be playing for the Angels or Red Sox in 2011 unless the Yanks turn him into a DH.

I don't know what I would do if I was Doug Melvin/Mark A. Hard to trade away your best player besides Braun. But unless the crew do something about their terrible pitching, it's a waste to keep him around w/o getting anything in return.

October 11, 2009  07:33 PM ET

My bad, he'll be one year short of f.agency and will get Arbitration from the crew unless he resigns. Definitely don't trade him!

The latter half may be true, but he is no bum.

That might carry some validity if it weren't coming from a Chicago baseball fan.

If I'm not mistaken (I may be), P.F. was actually 30 pounds lighter this year. Perhaps next year he will be another 30 pounds lighter, and that much quicker on the trigger. 60 HR's, .325 BA, OBP 10% higher...etc. , may be just around the corner. We shall see.

Bad Attitude? Not really. He's a proven clubhouse glue guy. Also, take for example the time he was robbed by a Chicago Cub of his first grand slam early this year and as he walked to the dugout he took his helmet off to the guy honoring his good catch. Guys with bad attitudes usually don't do things like that.

I would say it's a little of the pot calling the kettle black here, eh?

October 12, 2009  02:32 AM ET

I still say he will be wearing Dodger Blue next season. Loney + pitching to the crew for Fielder.

I have learned that whenever a team say they are not shopping a player, they are lying through their teeth...
He will be shipped off if the price is right.
