NFL owner: Painkiller addiction might nix Limbaugh

09:44 AM ET 10.11 | One NFL owner was not dismissing Rush Limbaugh's Rams ownership out of hand. "I would like to do my homework on him," he said. "I don't judge people on third party accounts or hearsay." One owner also brought up Limbaugh's past painkiller addiction as an issue that will have to be addressed. Although rich owners tend to be Republican, one owner said that would not help Limbaugh gain any votes in the room. "It won't make a difference," he said.

Oh, boy. Here we go again!

But then again, can he be any worse than Dan Snyder or Al Davis?

They don't have a radio pulpit.

Players would have full access to pills

October 11, 2009  09:56 AM ET

Limbaugh is an idiot.

October 11, 2009  10:00 AM ET

If the pills keep him from owning an NFL team then we can truly call Oxycontin the miracle drug.

Good thing drug addictions don't disqualify players. Owners don't care about Rush's pain killer addiction. They simply don't want to have to deal with the NAACP, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton crowd screaming "Rush is a racist" along with the rest of their nonsense.

The BIGGEST reason Limbaugh would never get the nod is that he and his ownership group would want to keep the Rams in St. Louis. The league DESPERATELY wants a team back in LA and the Rams make the most sense of the four teams always mentioned (Oakland, JAX and MIN) since they have a history in SoCal AND a move wouldn't screw up the divisional alignments.

It seems very little disqualify's players anymore.

How about the opposite - he wants the team to stay in STL and so does the league?

Rush Limpbore as a majority owner will never happen. He might sneak in the backdoor as a minority owner, but the NFL would never allow the drug-head blowhard to be the majority owner. Would be a PR disaster for the NFL.

I very much doubt the owners would even consider him for a minority ownership.

If Rush buys the Rams, he'll just spend all that extra cabbage on drugs again.

That Rush, he crack me up. Ha! (No pun intended - I know that not his choice of drug, but could not resist.)

Why would the league care to keep them in St.Louis? Attendance numbers are horrible and they don't have deep roots there. They also are the only team that's for sale, making it easy to move them with a purchase by an LA ownership group. Of the 4 teams most likely to move, Minnesota is one that league most definitely wants to stay put if possible.

If anyone remembers that movie The Usual Suspects, there's a line that goes "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people that he didn't exist". That is your average sports team owner. They are cut-throat business men, driven by greed and conquest (corporate or otherwise), perfectly happy and willing to work their employees to death and climb to the top on the backs of both friend and foe.

Criminals, drug addicts, misogynists, and misanthropes make up a goodly percentage of sports team ownership I would bet. But the trick they pull is... They DON'T LET YOU KNOW what dirtbags they are, for the most part. They stay silent. They pull in the millions, stiff the pension fund, fire ticket takers to save $9.50 and bilk taxpayers out of billions for new stadiums. But we rarely ever see that. All we ever see is some smiling old coot in a tinted luxury box in a 10 second cut-away by Fox or CBS. We never know that this guy came straight to the stadium from the eviction proceedings at the orphanage. If we knew that, most of us would lose our taste for pro sports to some degree, if not completely.

No way. A guy like Lush Rimjaughb is EXACTLY the kind of owner that other owners fear... a guy who will expose the underworld of sports ownership and the people in charge. A guy who will bring constant negative inquiry and public suspicion to everyone by association. They don't want that. The only reason the Good Old Boy network stays intact is because all the GOB's are on the same page. Someone starts the boat a'rockin' and the whole thing is in danger. They won't let some dopehead gasbag put their good thing in jeopardy.

October 11, 2009  11:07 AM ET

Who cares if he owns the team, they are all rich conservative pric*s anyhow. He's just vocal about it. I can't stand him, but its a free country.

Damn, my whole image of JJ has been crushed.
