Who will play shortstop for Red Sox?

06:24 AM ET 10.13 | The Red Sox still haven't found a shortstop who can stick, designating Julio Lugo for assignment and watching Jed Lowrie struggle with injuries this year. The Sox are interested in bringing back Alex Gonzalez, who has a club option for $6 million. That number, though, might be a little rich for the Sox. So they are likely to sit down with Gonzalez and try to work out a more palatable number, though Gonzalez would likely ask for some assurances that he would be the starter.

Keep Gonzalez

Yup...you can't count on Lowrie to stay healthy. It's time for Theo to make a smart SS decision for a change, and keep Gonzalez.

Gonzos been pretty solid this year I would like to see them hang on to him too.
There are bigger issues to fix than short this offseason

Almost seems like a no-brainer ... get that decision out of the way and move on to ... oh, I don't know ... pitching? And a few other "holes" that exist ....

I think it's safe to slip into something more .... comfortable.

Yes, but that was yesterday. It's a new day bruins! I have the suit handy in case I need it.

Smart...my guess is we're not done hearing it yet.

Nope ... but, putting it all in perspective ... it's only a game. We fell short this year but we made a good run. No shame in that. So let the naysayers say nay ... I'm proud to be a life-long Red Sox fan, indoctrinated by 3 older brothers and my Dad ... and even my Mom. She's 86 and watches all the games she can!

Yup...very true. Frankly, I had my doubts about them even making the playoffs in August...they looked horrible. So the fact that they made it that far is a plus. The Angels are on a mission, and they are playing very well. Should be a good series.

I'm also a life-longer. My Dad grew up with Ted, me with Yaz. He took me to my first game in 1969. I'll always be grateful he lived long enough to see them finally win one.

My Dad died in Dec. of 2004 ... so, he got to see the first one. I'm glad about that.

with all the issues they've had I don't see how they don't sign Gonzo...he solidified that team the day he was signed. he also hit better than expected.

glad to hear that. one reason I'm so damn passionate about the yanks is my pop. they lost for so long before finally winning in '96...I was so happy for my dad and the next 3 WS were icing on the cake for him.

March of 2007 for mine. A few more months and he'd have seen two. Oh well, at least they got one in. I remember listening to WEEI a few years ago, and a caller said that "The Sox killed my grandfather, then they killed my father, now they're coming after me". Well, at least THAT finally got put to bed!

Absolutely...his bat was a huge surprise. I don't know if that will carry over to next year, but his defense is good enough to overlook a weak bat.
