07:23 AM ET 10.13 | Amid a growing chorus of opposition to his interest in buying the St. Louis Rams along with Dave Checketts, the owner of the NHL's St. Louis Blues, radio host Rush Limbaugh addressed the situation during his weekday radio show. Limbaugh focused his Monday remarks on the media, claiming that he's not surprised by the reaction of some journalists and broadcasters. And without specifically mentioning the quote in question, Limbaugh generally denied that he uttered one of the passages that is cited often by those who believe Limbaugh is a racist. Here's the quote, which can be found at multiple web site via a simple Google search, and which Bryan Burwell of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch used in a recent column: "I mean, let's face it, we didn't have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: Slavery built the South. I'm not saying we should bring it back. I'm just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark." During his Monday show, Limbaugh broadly claimed that 15 hours per week of radio programming covering 21 years had been reviewed. (It's a job that would take more than 16,000 hours, so he apparently has a bunch of employees.) Said Limbaugh, "There is not even an inkling that any words in this quote are accurate." But here's the key -- he never directly denied saying the precise words that Burwell assigned to him.

Agreed, although you shouldn't keep your hopes up asking anything this complicated to the FN staff.

I see Marge Schott finally lost all her hair. Boo.bs are about the same though. Have to wear long sleeve shirts to hide the swastika tattoos.

Never thought I'd see Rush in a T&R thread once, let alone consistently on a day-to-day basis. Go back to your radio show Rush or better yet, just go home.

Rush seems to want to be desperately involved with the NFL somehow. Recall a few years ago, he thought he should be one of the talking heads on MNF; then ESPN hired him as a pre-game analyst, which lasted only a few weeks before he had a "Jimmy The Greek" moment.

I think this is more his ego talking than anything of substance. That and wanting to see his name in the news.

October 13, 2009  08:11 AM ET

The guy is an entertainer. He says controversial things to build up his ratings and his bank account. As such, he has sold his soul for the almighty dollar. He has no integrity.

And that alone should disqualify him from being an NFL owner.

And his polarizing political views should keep FN from putting up threads about him. This is a sports site. We don't need Nancy Pelosi here. We don't want to see Sarah Palin either, unless maybe she's topless.

Got that, FN? Football. Or "nice rack."

That's the thing, though. Limbaugh seems to have a Jimmy the Greek moment every 15 minutes. I wouldn't have a problem with Limbaugh if it was just a one time thing. My problem is he makes a habit out of making racist statements.

Rush,

I know it's difficult, since you have diarrhea-of-the-mouth, but think of it this way.........according to you, 280 million people don't want to hear what you have to say, you racist so SHUT THE **** UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

**** going to change the name to the ku klux rams

October 13, 2009  08:18 AM ET

This is a win win situation . He will NOT be an NFL owner. He WILL blame it on a biased media. He becomes the victim and the NFL does not have to deal with him. It works out for everybody ( except Dave Checketts).

October 13, 2009  08:22 AM ET

Why not have Al Sharpton buy the team and change the NFL to the Negro Football League. Sports is getting out of hand with this racial BS.

What happened to all those things you guys normally say, like: Rush was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or everyone deserves a second chance. Or he just has to put this behind him. Or the media blew this out of proportion. Ah, you say, with Rush it's a pattern of behavior. That's true of most of the guys you defend. I agree with you that Rush is disgusting. But I also think you guys apply your standards arbitrarily.

October 13, 2009  08:31 AM ET

god bless america. Where idiots can say whatever they want. Guys like Rush are far less harmless than the closet racists that don't openly voice there opinions! think of the damage he could if he had kept his view to himself and then became and NFL team owner.
everyones entitled to an opionion and we are all entitled to ignore the ones we don't agree with, is what makes this a great place.

I like Dave Checketts, but he picked the wrong guy to partner up with on this bid. Like I said,I don't think anybody would be raising a fuss about Limbaugh had he made one statement and apologized for it. We're a forgiving society. But not only does he say this stuff,he's proud that he said it,and then he wonders what the problem is when someone calls him on it.

And dadork, let me ask your something. You're one of the black players on the Rams, and you hear Limbaugh,a man with a history of making racist statements" wants to buy your team. You gonna be happy about potentially working for a guy who has no use for your race whatsoever? I know I wouldn't.

Part of what he said it true, it did build the south. this ignoramous tends to make these remarks worse, he just keeps putting his foot in his mouth. he must really like toe jam.
