06:01 AM ET 10.14 | Mario Chalmers has not necessarily welcomed new Heat teammate Carlos Arroyo with open arms. Instead, there has been resistance. That is considered good. ``There were times we'd have some drills and the intensity was way up,'' coach Erik Spoelstra said after Tuesday's practice, Arroyo's second since he signed with the team Monday. For Chalmers, Arroyo's arrival marks the first time the 2008 second-round draft pick has had to face a veteran with such an NBA resume. Chalmers downplayed Arroyo's presence as a potential motivating factor that would bring out his best.

a surprise step in the right direction - "Even with Arroyo signing a $1.1 million contract that isn't guaranteed unless he's on the team beyond Jan. 10".

Arroyo has had his moments and if anything he should be better than Chris Quinn. (is that saying much?).

Chalmers has a better overall game than Arroyo, period.

October 14, 2009  07:40 AM ET

The signing is a good deal for both the player and the team. Arroyo is a solid second-string point guard that can start if necessary and is indubitably an upgrade over Quinn. He's also probably more polished offensively than Chalmers is at this point. He can challenge Chalmers and teach him at the same time. For Arroyo, he gets to be close to home in a large Puerto Rican community with the opportunity for local endorsements. And he has credibility - I'm sure Wade remembers getting smoked by Arroyo in international play. In the 2004 Olympics he helped upset the US with 25 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals.

The title reads: "Chalmers resists Arroyo's arrival", and the summary includes the line: "Instead, there has been resistance."

All of that is irrelevant. To use a line from Star Trek, "Resistance is futile", and "Arroyo will be assimilated".

October 14, 2009  08:15 AM ET

Neither one are that good!

October 14, 2009  08:33 AM ET

Chalmers has nothing to worry about as players that have not played in the NBA for long periods struggle when they rejoin the league. Marbury, Kristic and Eddy Curry are prime examples. Now add Arroyo to the list and you have another Miami crisis.

I mean if you truly are the worlds buggest optomist.....
sure the signing of ONE back-up player is a step in the
right direction- since they've done jack-s h ! t this off-season

biggest- not buggest

isn't spoelstra that stuff that makes your keister leak?

October 14, 2009  09:09 AM ET

none will better miami's chances in the playoffs or in resigning wade...

arroyo is decent...good shooter and quick with the ball...should only raise chalmer's game playing against a proven vet like that daily..shut up and put the weed down kid!

Oh Jesus... go back in your mom's basement

Nice pick up even if it's for the year - More insurance not to bog Wade down with PG duties as was suggested all summer long. Ain't gonna get them over any hump over the other East powerhouses or keep Wade past this year but at least a baby step toward right direction.....

Oh and he will fill up the stands with the latino community there in Miami - No doubt...!!!

are you kidding me, half the league's stars get busted with the stuff. i don't thing the smoke is the problem if that many big name players are lighting up. in all actuallity, i'm surprised some of the big stars aren't trying to name brand some of the smoke coming out of the now trendy (and soon to be legal) california coffee shops. smoke expands your horizons little man, anybody that has tried it would know that. either way, if you have tried it, and you're still slamming it, you're a hypocrite. if you haven't tried it, then you're just ignorant, and probably never went to college.

October 14, 2009  10:04 AM ET

About time.

October 14, 2009  10:06 AM ET

Chalmers realizes that it's his job and minutes that may be on the line. Arroyo have what it takes to cut Chalmers production in half. There's also a big Latino population in Miami and that can influence how certain things happen with Miami basketball.

October 14, 2009  10:18 AM ET

If Chalmers is any bit the player that Heat fans claim him to be, he should welcome any competition that comes along.

October 14, 2009  10:29 AM ET

Supernintendo Chalmers should be a pretty solid PG, but there's no problem with adding another quality guard for depth. Although, it doesn't really matter consider Wade essentially runs point during any crucial game stretch.

'quality' guard ?
who are you speaking of?

Arroyo is a 7 pt 3 assist guy....that's not quality- that's mediocrity
I'm not saying the guy 'sucks' but theres a reason he's been on
5 teams in his career and was out of the league last year......

this is SUCH an inconsequential move- it's almost laughable

This is the perfect example why they should focus more on birth control....No wonder America is sliding down the toilet bowl...
