05:46 AM ET 10.15 | At least one baseball observer has a different view of the Mets front office. Peter Gammons today called owner Jeff Wilpon the general manager, and said Omar Minaya is only "out there to take the heat." Gammons, as heard on the Michael Kay Show on 1050 ESPN New York, was asked why the Mets had not hired a particular coach. Gammons replied, "Ask the general manager, Jeff Wilpon." Asked why Minaya wasn't interested, Gammons replied, "He's not the general manager. Omar's the one out there to take the heat."

That's our boy Omar! taking one for the team.

At least 1 Met is contributing to something this season.

So Wilpon had a sit-down with Snyder and J Jones and talked about how best to run your franchise/plaything huh? Or maybe Snyder and Jones made a video and Wilpon bought it and watched it over and over. It might explain a lot.

Sounds like Gammons is running the team

Signing Bobby Valentine as manager would be the cheapest and best way to help the Mets both on the field and with ticket sales. It really makes too much sense not to happen. However, knowing the Mets, we are more likely to see a half asleep Jerry Manuel for another seasons.

Jerry Manuel, unfortunately for us Mets fans, will be the manager next year. Sure they are playing the injury bug card hot and heavy, however this team under performed from the All-star break until the end. This Mets team lacked the basic fundamentals , dropping balls, runnning poorly, throwing to the wrong people and he totally mishandled what should have been a decent to mediocre pitching staff.
The Mets need to shed their management core, Minaya and Manuel and start with someone fresh such as a Kim NG (she is going to be good) and Either Valentine or if you really want this team to learn the game of baseball Buck Showalter.

October 15, 2009  09:25 AM ET

The lack of basic baseball fundamentals falls on the manager 100%. Signing Showalter would make sense, but then you need to fire him to win the World Series. Bobby V would do anything to manage the Mets again.

LOL Levitynyc good point, but I think we both agree that this current mismanagement needs to go. Imagine this Reyes if not traded and healthy under Showalter , he might actually realize his potential once he stops sulking.

October 15, 2009  09:35 AM ET

It's the Mets, does it even matter?

October 15, 2009  09:51 AM ET

Peter Gammons speaks the truth.. I mean look how they lump Minaya and Manuel's job together. I've never seen something like that in sports before. Its like Minaya is far from being in charge anymore. I mean normally if a manager stinks, the Gen. Manager fires him and hires another one. Minaya is far from calling the shots and hasn't done so all year. The team is strapped for cash and we all know that.

Could be worse. Could be management of the Buffalo Bills.

I would like to see Wally Backman get a shot at managing the club but reorganizing this operation must start at the top and down to the minors to think baseball.

October 15, 2009  10:26 AM ET

not for nothing but the wilpons (losers) should do everyone a favor, fire themselves sell the team to Jerry Seinfeld (a winner) and then we should do over that jackie robinson rotunda becasue we all know he didnt play for the mets so who friggin gives a hoot about him. put up more 86 and 69 memories, paint more stuff in the park orange and blue. change those hideious seats from green to Blue with orange piping/stiching and put mets logo on the seats. have the staff and security wear orange and blue polos not friggin Green and Red and give that stadium a more "HOME" Feel to it dammit!!!... Fire Jerry and Omar and replace them with Billy Beene and Wally Backman... Turn this thing around boys!!!

Well, I heard that Peter Gammons was saying this because "Peter has lobbied for a player development position within the Mets organization..."

October 15, 2009  10:53 AM ET

This is ridiculous, wtf. This sounds obsurd.

No one lobbies for a position in the Mets "organization".

What exactly would that fix? Wally Backman has never managed above Single-A. And everyone seems to think Billy Beane is the answer to everything. What has he actually won with Oakland? Plus, the team has been terrible the last 5 years.
