09:09 AM ET 10.18 | Agreed, it's hard to imagine Larry Bird walking away from a multi-million contract that has one year remaining after this one. Nevertheless, two NBA management sources, one inside the Pacers organization and one former employee whose initials are not D.W., contend the team president will call it quits at the season's conclusion -- citing health and lack-of-enjoyment issues.

ZZZZz!

October 18, 2009  10:05 AM ET

thats weird. i would've thought a winner like Bird would have enjoyed being on a 36-46 team.

The only reason he is leaving is because David Stern will institute his new rule where you can't have too many white guys on one team. To make room for Tyler Hansbrough, he will step aside ...

Ummm... Actually it was Donnie Walsh that put the team in the cellar... Larry has revived their image and made them somewhat competitive again in a short time...

sad to see Larry Legend leave the game but its time for the Pacers to move on as well, he should go back to Coaching.

actaully Waslsh didn't do much of anything the last
few years in Indy as he was being phased out.

Bird has been running the show for at least 4+ years

And lets say you're correct-
what exactly has he done other than draft Granger?

He's given fans something to cheer about, and fielded a competitive team who plays hard and drafted/traded for players who are solid characters and good in the community. Win or lose, he's put together a team that I can support and root for. That can't be said for JO, Artest, Tinsley, Jackson, or any other of the troublemakers.

Bull.
The players you mentioned - JO, Artest, and Jackson (maybe not Tinsley) - were all better than the scrubs that are on the team at present.
However, the Pacers were at their best in the mid to late 90's, when Reggie Miller was wrapping up his career, and the team was a title contender. Back then, Bird was coaching or had just started his role as GM.

if you're a fan of mediocrity- I cannot fault you
I'm not saying not to root for your team......

But Indy frankly stinks- and other than Granger-
your roster- is BAD-

Well they finished 9th in the East... Not title contenders, but Bird made a lot of moves to clean up the roster that no one in Indy would support the past couple of years... And if you look through their 08-09 results, the Pacers very rarely got blown out. They probably led the league in games that came down to the last shot (on the losing end mostly).

At the end of the day, Bird has done what was asked of him. He cleaned up that thug filled roster that no one in Indy would support, and made them competitive fairly quickly while doing it... The Pacers are not the pushover you think they are...

C'mon JGB, let's look at the bright side...Under his watch, they have perenially had to chance to improve dramatically via the lottery...

Flipping 'em the Bird? Can't blame 'im - if they hire him to run the show, and it ain't goin' his way.

He was one of the few former stars that could coach...he hired Carlisle and the older guy to coach offense and defense and they did a great job...

OTJ let's both stick to hockey...where thugs don't have to wear Tats u can barely see and they can back up the smack without a metal weapon...

I second that, Ted!

Good move. After quite a few years, a new voice may serve them better anyway!
