Report: Tank knew he was in trouble

Tank tried. He all but begged to just forget the whole thing. Standing on the street beside his Lexus, while officer Andrew Bates of the Gilbert, Ariz., police department conducted field sobriety tests on him, Terry ''Tank'' Johnson realized that his career with the Bears, his career in the NFL, was in trouble. The police report shows Johnson couldn't touch his nose. He couldn't stand with his feet together. Johnson told police several times that he hadn't had any alcohol, though the blood test suggested otherwise. He said that within 24 hours of being pulled over, he had taken two Valium to help him sleep on a flight to Arizona.

Clearly, Chicago made the right decision. End of story...

July 11, 2007  07:54 AM ET

He'll bounce back....Good luck.

July 11, 2007  08:25 AM ET

He'll get another chance somewhere after his 8 game suspension if he can stay out of trouble with all is free time.

July 11, 2007  08:31 AM ET

I am tired of that **** picture!

July 11, 2007  08:55 AM ET

I am glad somebody printed this. So take the he wasn't "legally" drunk excuses and take off. He was "almost" drunk excuses and take off. The guy couldn't pass the field sobriety tests, that is an indication that no matter the blood alcohol level he was a danger to the public. I am glad this was posted. So what do all of you defenders of the tank want to say now?

July 11, 2007  08:57 AM ET

He'll get another chance somewhere, so long as he can stay in shape until he's able to come back. But I'm glad the Bears cut him, I'm glad they try to give grace when they can, but refuse to become, say, the Bengals.

July 11, 2007  09:09 AM ET

I hope he was crying like a little b.itch

July 11, 2007  09:15 AM ET

Seems like a bright enough guy.

Many sober and innocent people cannot touch their nose and stand with their feet together while lying to the cops about not having been drinking after being pulled over for speeding at 3:30 in the morning.

It's also a shame his doctor gave him that perscription for valium. Errr, he did have a perscription right?

Seriously though, I do hope he gets his life together and comes back. It's always good to see people recover and rebound ala Cris Carter.

It seems as though Tank has his work cut out for him.

July 11, 2007  09:36 AM ET

I'm with the other guy up there, I've had enough of this friggin picture. He looks like.....i don't even know.

July 11, 2007  09:42 AM ET

Tank really isnt even a great player

The ONLY reason the bears didnt cut him before is Harris got hurt

July 11, 2007  09:46 AM ET

Nice going Chicago. See you in another 10 years. Rex Grossman and Cedric Benson? Come on.

Everyone who battled for you, Briggs, Johnson and Thomas Jones are all over your team.

As for getting pulled over in Arizona? Thos cops are the most racist on the planet. Remember that Arizona was the last state to adopt MLK's B Day. Any large black man driving a nice car is bound to get pulled over there.

As far as taking 2 Val. when you're on a plane - What's wrong with that? That's not an illegal substance. Nothing wrong with having a drink either.

Go Go Rex Grossman and good luck Chicago - welcome back to the middle of the road.

I SOO MUCH AGREE, he looks like he just got out of the bathroom and didn't like what he smelt. Bears did release him prematurely but he'll end up some where and I hope its in the AFC.

July 11, 2007  09:59 AM ET

here we go again....what police report??......oh ..you mean the report from the same police that had to admit that they had slipped up??..that report......yeah..thats like George Bush's report on the progress being made in Iraq....who in their right mind would believe a report made up by the police after all of the evidence is out??.....get the f--k out of here...and you guys are really something else....your still holding on to some hope that he was drunk.....its too obvious guys.....where is the dashboard camera from the patrol car??......certainly the camera should show that "tank couldnt touch his nose"....where is the audio tape??..oh audio tape you say......yes, audio tape...police officers carry audio recorders in their breast pockets to protect them from lawsuits...well..where are they??? ....and im supposed to believe that this man was drunk because this one overzealous cop decides to doctor a report after the evidence has come out and basically cleared the men??...im not supposed to think that this officer( and i dont feel comfortable calling him that) is just trying to cover his a--??.....right...tell me anything.....now just release urlacher and we can move on...

July 11, 2007  10:03 AM ET

dont panic girls.....the Urlacher thing was a joke.....im tired of that picture as well....he looks like he just found out that his girfriend is a man

July 11, 2007  10:32 AM ET

Just keep checking youtube, everything else shows up on there.

July 11, 2007  10:33 AM ET

Antonio,
you are a waste of time, I hope noone wastes their time on you today.

July 11, 2007  10:51 AM ET

I'm with All Starz.

Besides, the issue isn't whether he was drunk or not. The issue is that the Bears bent over backwards to help this guy, who really isn't a key player in their defense. A good player, and useful, but definitely not essential. After they visited him in jail, stood by him, gave him grace, they told him he had to be on his best behavior. And what did he do? Sure, nothing illegal, besides speeding, but the fact is he (1) took medication and drove within 24 hours, which one is not supposed to do (2) took medication and consumed alcohol within the same 24 hours, which one is not supposed to do (3) drove after having consumed both alcohol and prescription pills (4) he sped, 15 over, which is almost reckless driving, putting him right on the verge of many serious crimes.

Should they have cut him? Not on this incident alone, but with his history, yeah. Certainly isn't going to win Tank Man of the Year award. Or has he dropped that goal already?

July 11, 2007  11:05 AM ET

The Bears made a mistake in cutting lose Tank. I mean he was already a PR nightmare. A DUI arrest wasnt going to add much to it. Is he worse than what TO dies during the season??? come on!!! Well, come september and Tank will have a team and the Bears will regret the decision. And we are talking about Bears, who got rid of defensive genius Rivera in a hurry for some crappy reason and then pooh poohed in giving the the lowest paid coach a rise even after he took them to the Super Bowl.

July 11, 2007  11:06 AM ET

With the Valium episode... that qualify him for a newscaster job... isn't an opening in Fox right now?
We can have a bunch of NFLPA reality shows in the NFL network next offseason....

etc, etc, etc

Harlen S you're a complete idiot. Did you even read the article? He was a danger to the public, failed the field test, probably would've failed the blood test had it been taken 20 minutes earlier. The valium? It is illegal if you don't have a prescription...I highly doubt he had one. He obviously was trying to slither his way out of another sticky situation. He knows that he's messing up...the worst kind.

The Bears didn't dump Johnson for speeding, which is why police pulled him over. They dumped him because he'd become too serious a distraction, an embarrassment, too big a pain in the butt. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE HARLEM? OF COURSE IT DOESN'T, YOU DON'T HAVE THE BRAIN CELLS TO COMPUTE THAT STATEMENT.

We'll see who's better this year Jones or Benson. Just remember Jones was nothing until he got behind the Bears line and he's old for a RB. Nice contract Jets.
