Bucs still waiting on Plummer

The Bucs have left the light on for Jake Plummer but for how long? Word is, Bucs coach Jon Gruden and his trusty tracker, GM Bruce Allen, have ditched their own vacation plans to expand the search for the missing quarterback. Allen and Plummer had been in contact, but, well, who knows with flighty Jake.

Jake - Whatever you do, stick to your guns. The Bucs have no shot at winning. I like Gracia, Hell, I like alot of the players on the Bucs. What I don't like is Gruden & GM! They will not win w/ him and they never did! You know the truth.....stay with it.

July 11, 2007  08:09 AM ET

Why do they even want him. Garcia will be the starter. This puzzles me....

July 11, 2007  08:10 AM ET

Plummer's a bum anyway. He **** the bed on a GOOD team last year, what makes Gruden think he'll be better for a garbage team? Oh wait, I forgot, they have Chris Simms...

July 11, 2007  08:10 AM ET

I've never quite understood why so many people are down on Plummer.... I know that he screwed up in the playoffs against Pittsburgh a couple years ago, but he is still a far better starting QB than over half of the teams in the NFL....

Cleveland should have made a play for him... give Quinn lots of time to learn the game - and adjust Quinn's ego....

July 11, 2007  08:27 AM ET

Quinn will be just fine. That Offensive Line is coming along fast....The running game will be a little better.......and he has nice young targets in the passing game. The Defense will slow this team down again. Quinn will go through his bumps but......He needs to keep that Ego, Fire, and Drive.

Quinn has one major Mechanical issue that he must fix before it ends his career. When he drops back and throws he hikes his right leg and puts all his weight on his left leg. The first time a DE comes and hits that leg..........It could do the same thing as Culpeppers. Watch for it. Hopefully he corrects it.

July 11, 2007  08:39 AM ET

but you must agree that Plummer is not that bad.... he was a top 5 QB before they drafted Cutler and played with his head...

July 11, 2007  08:49 AM ET

Top 5??? No. He is good......but not at that status. He was in the Top 16 of QB's.

July 11, 2007  09:05 AM ET

I think top five is a bit of a stretch. And if he can't handle competition (Cutler) and keep his head in his game, then he's definitely not a top 10 QB, and wouldn't have stayed solid for long, even without a real threat behind him.

I think it's too bad that he's out, I think he's better than most of the QB's in the game, and I'd like to see him get more time to get his game back. But then I'm a Grossman fan, so what do I know.

July 11, 2007  09:08 AM ET

AAAOOO.....Thats something you shouldn't say in Public......Canada Eh?

July 11, 2007  09:29 AM ET

Eh, he certainly needs work. I'm not sure I'm actually a fan of Grossman, but I think the Bears are doing the right thing in sticking with him. I think overall it makes more sense than risking dismantling your defense to bring in a stud QB. We've managed to do okay with him, all we need is for him to steadily improve. But then, that's not really what this board's about . . .

July 11, 2007  09:49 AM ET

Plummer just needs to finally get the paper work in for the retirement. The bucs would do better with Garcia in the stance that he can keep his head in the game and doesn't let the fans get to him. Plummer had his chances, now its time to go fishing or something else.

July 11, 2007  10:12 AM ET

plummer was just so up and down and it wasnt just from game to game it was from play to play. a team cant count on him, that being said why do the bucs get an old qb???? they are yrs away from winning, if they have no faith in simms why is he there and if they do why not play him???

July 11, 2007  10:19 AM ET

Wow! They must really not be impressed with some of the QBs they have in camp right now. Simms could be the odd man out if they do coax Jake the Snake to come back...I doubt he does though.

July 11, 2007  10:29 AM ET

Jake won't come back. His head has gotten too big for his neck to handle. I think tampa wants a solid backup and not to have wasted what they traded away. Simms is a fellow 'horn, but lets call a spade a spade...he's pretty terrible.

Tampa needs to leave him alone. He's been w/ a losing arizona team and I don't think he can put up w/ it anymore. His age is starting to become a factor and I don't think he wants to put in the effort unless the team has legitimate threats to take the final hardware.

July 11, 2007  10:31 AM ET

bucs have never won with gruden, check 2002

July 11, 2007  11:51 AM ET

Plummer's a bum?!?

He was pretty good on a bunch of horrible teams in Arizona, and in 2005 he had what, 8 interceptions the whole year vs. like 20 TD passes? Last year he didn't perform because Mike Shanahan pulled yet another stupid Gruden-like move and drafted Cutler. That was a betrayal, nothing less. Plummer was one of the highest rated passers in 05. Denver will NEVER win another Super Bowl with Shanahan because just like Martz and Gruden, Shanahan thinks he's a "genius" now and nothing he does is wrong. He's wasted pick after pick on his rotating RB sickness, all the while letting Denver's real strength, it's O-Line deterioriate.

Oh, and I think Jake's done if Tampa is his only option. He won't play for another egomaniac like Shanahan, and that's all Gruden is. Now if he was traded to Minnesota...

July 11, 2007  11:58 AM ET

I wonder if they're gonna try and get Joe Montana or Warren Moon to come out of retirement too?! I mean, come on... How many QB's they got? Like seven?! Maybe they should try to lure some retired O-linemen out of retirement instead of worrying about another QB...especially one who don't want to play for them!!!

July 11, 2007  12:06 PM ET

Day 131 of Plummergate. I have not been this enthralled with waiting since Baby Jessica was stuck in a well. The only thing that could top this would be if Jake was stuck in a well......and Scott Baio saved him.

July 11, 2007  12:12 PM ET

The Bucs are not all that serious about Jake. He was just a low cost/high potential pick-up.

And no, they are not happy with their QBs., except for Garcia apparantly.

Simms has done nothing, Gradkowski is raw and probably a career back-up and Rattay is just a guy.

Simms may be the future, but who knows at this point.

I actually think that is Garcia stays healthy and that new O-line gells then they can be competitive with anyone next year.

Remember Gruden took a pretty mediocre team to the playoffs two years ago. Last year was a mess mainly due to injuries.

Gruden is an excellent coach, whose offensive accument was the missing ingredient in 2002. Dungy would not have won with that team. The Bucs would be foolish to fire him.

July 11, 2007  12:16 PM ET

If Plummer doesn't want to play with them and would rather retire (as seems to be the case), I don't see how the Bucs could force him to play for them (nor what they'd want to). Bu I don't think the Bucs will be able to get any money out of him, either. If they try that, all he has to do is show up overweight and "pull a muscle" the first day (or just play really really poorly in practice), and the Bucs won't have much alternative but to release him.

I don't know why the Bucs traded a pick for him given this, just a bizarre situation.
