Are NHL drafts biased?

07:49 AM ET 10.21 | If there's a bias against drafting hockey players from a certain part of the world, it's the Russians who suffer, not Quebecers, says the NHL's top scout. Or maybe it's players from Ontario who suffer the most, says the International Ice Hockey Federation, which included in part of its stats-based argument -- tongue-in-cheek -- that some Maple Leafs players are having a much better year than Alex Ovechkin. It's all part of a backlash to the publication of a book by former NHLer Bob Sirois that alleges the NHL is prejudiced against French Canadians.

On topic... making Maple Leaf players look better than Ovechkin...

Proof that you can make stats do anything you want them to...

We should institute a new policy of affirmative action for the NHL draft. Minorities are simply not being represented enough in recent draft classes, and this is the only way to right this wrong.

I don't think its you, the article is definatley stupid, and I'm not sure what its all about either. Who is it saying their is a biast against? Ontario, Quebec or Russia? If its biased against one or all threee of these, then who is stealing the picks? And What is the art thrown in that says LEafs players are having a better year the ovechkin? Does the whole leaf team together even have as many points as him?

This story ran on TSN last night - an ex NHLer named Bob Sirois has written a book that claims the entire hockey system discriminates against Quebecers. He is serious as well, to save you from asking that question. The cover of the book even has a frog facing off against a bull, playing that much more of the race card. Unreal. They even interviewed Francois Beauchemin, who stated he doesn't see it and hasn't noticed it...ever. Mathew Barnaby - now a commentator on TSN for those of you who don't know - played in the QMJHL and he came out and said that the Q doesn't prepare its players for the NHL game as well as the W and the O, which would go a long ways towards the lack of representation in the NHL, if there is such a thing. Bob McKenzie noted that there is often a "lack" of Quebecers on our World Junior teams because its been Western coaches the last 5 years and they are more likely to stock a team with players they are familiar to seeing play regularly, which makes sense. Geez, they had the chance to correct it this past tourney when they had hired on a French coach, but he quit before picking the team, and Pat Quinn took over with a Western dominated team again. Giroux COULD have weighted the team towards the french end of things, but he took the job with the Rochester Americans instead.

The book isn't even being published in english - the author says its to send a message, but TSN did a bit of snooping I guess and found out that no publishers were interested in the english version of the book.

Personally speaking, I think this is just another example of a minority coming up with a conspiracy theory as to why they can't keep up with the rest of the world. Its not by accident that the best players aren't coming out of Quebec anymore - and the last one that did wasn't even french, haha. Think about it by looking at the highest end talent in each of the drafts since the lockout. Crosby (product of the Q, not french), Ovechkin, Malkin, Tavares, Toews, Kane, Doughty, Bogosian, Cody Hodgson, Taylor Hall next year...none are french. Do you really think THE LEAGUE is trying to keep the frenchmen down? Or, more realistically, have the french simply dropped off in terms of talent level/maybe not have the commitment level necessary to be elite? Alot of times, when you fail, its YOUR fault, not everyone elses...

It makes no sense to say it's a NHL bias. No one likes Quebecers.

October 21, 2009  10:22 AM ET

I you build it they will come.

And to my eye the Q-Bec junior league is simply not building it.

They play hockey in Japan too. But nobody from that league is getting drafted either. Is that discriminatory?

Been this way for 1000 years and will be for another.

Russians are hurt because there is no transfer agreement. Would you want to spend your first round pick on a player that may or may not ever play for you and stay in the KHL.

October 21, 2009  10:34 AM ET

Francophone's aren't hurt in the draft, they are always just complaining about something.

What minorities? Russians, that is because there is no draft program. What are you going to due, force every team to draft one Russian in the draft.

Yes.

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. With your last pick, you have no Russians, but there is none good left, so you are forced to draft a **** guy that you know will never even make an AHL team, and wont come over from the KHL.
