Several Miami people consider senior Kyle Wright the favorite, but one UM football official insists the quarterback job remains genuinely open, meaning junior Kirby Freeman can seize it if he clearly outplays Wright in August.

Is Freeman a scrambler? or does he have a better arm? What is the difference between him and Wright?

July 11, 2007  10:00 AM ET

For the love of God, somebody help me.

July 11, 2007  10:23 AM ET

From what I've read, they're the same kind of QB. Wright just chokes too much, so Freeman had a chance to take the job. The problem is, they're too similar, so Freeman is just as bad as Wright.

When is the last time Miami's had a black QB?

July 11, 2007  10:42 AM ET

no they r not the same kind of qb freeman can throw and he is a scrambler. damn do yall watch miami play

July 11, 2007  10:57 AM ET

I'm still bummed about Noel Devine not coming to the U...but as a 'Cane fan I can't blame him for not coming given the past few seasons...

Whoever it is that plays QB ....I hope we can get back to being the powerhouse we were just a few years back.

July 11, 2007  10:59 AM ET

"Freeman can throw" very astute observation there.

They did just as good in the spring game, so that's what I was basing my observation on.

Freeman is more mobile than Wright, but he averages 18 yards per game. Although that is better than wright, I still think he's more of a pocket passer, like Wright.

KSU...hasnt been any good since Michael Bishop was quarterback, lol

July 11, 2007  12:29 PM ET

I watched Kirby play many times during his high school career. He is extremely adept at both running and throwing. The former coaching staff screwed up big-time by not naming him as the starting QB his sophmore season and letting him grow. Going to Miami was a huge mistake for him and he has had second thoughts about leaving as recently as last year. Hopefully, the new staff will give him a shot and he will be able to show what he can do.

Dinero what does black or white have to do with it?

That is like asking when the last time Miami had a white running back or WR? There is no relevance to that statement.

And FYI the last two African American QBs for the U were: Ryan Collins and Kenny Kelly.

Neither one really had a great career. And it had nothing to do with race. More about injuries and the rest of the team.

last black QB at Miami was Derrick Cruddup 2 years ago, played behind Dorsey and Berlin...id like to see them give Marve a fair shot, class status shouldnt have anything to do with it, look what Colt McCoy did last year.

Dinero...
When was the last time Miami has had a Hispanic QB??? NEVER!

I could go on and on about this topic but it will get me NOwhere.
Sure you're statement may be valid but it's not about a racial thing...black, white, hispanic, asian...MIAMI needs a good QB and that's what it's all about. They need a leader that can pass, run, scrabble, etc...and they haven't had a solid QB since Dorsey. They're have been a lot of letdowns and we all know this.
It's time we get QB that can put up 7's and get W's!
I just want to see Miami back in a major bowl game and win a championship game.

July 11, 2007  05:25 PM ET

Miami will be back to its old form real soon. Shannon is recruiting from the best area SOUTH FLORIDA BABY! Everyone will be back on the band wagon. Nothing better than the Orange Bowl at night. Keep the tradition! 58 game home win streak!!!!!!!! They'll be back.

July 11, 2007  05:30 PM ET

Thanks canesfan. I forgot about Cruddup. Mostly because he never played.

My mistake there.

July 11, 2007  08:23 PM ET

ha no problem just trying to help out...i cant wait to see what we've got going on with james and cooper in the backfield though, it should at least take some of the pressure off the QBs

July 12, 2007  01:58 AM ET

If it helps......we just got a "Commit" from a black QB. *shrugs*

July 12, 2007  03:22 AM ET

It really doesn't matter who the starting QB is going to be because the
defense is good enough to carry this team.

July 12, 2007  03:49 AM ET

Carry it to what? The Starkist Weedeater Bowl? For Miami University, that is a meltdown season.
