Top seed Caroline Wozniacki was forced to retire from the Luxembourg Open with a hamstring and back injury when she led local star Anne Kremer 7-5 5-0. The Danish world number six was set to face Melanie Oudin in the first round but the American withdrew with illness. Wozniacki was last year's Luxembourg runner-up to Russian star Elena Dementieva and the Dane, who lost to [Kim] Clijsters in the US Open final, had been strolling to a routine win before injury struck. She was cruising past Luxembourg's 34-year-old Kremer when she pulled up with a problem with her left hamstring and her back.

Well, at least she did it while one game away from winning, rather than one game away from losing, so no one could say this was poor sportsmanship. Too bad for her, hope her injuries heal up quickly.

I want her!

What is not mentioned here is that at the point she was up 3-0, all of a sudden a TON of bets for her opponent came across the board.

I am not big into betting on the tennis scene. Are people allowed to bet on a match, while it is in progress??? Never heard of that before, especially on the outcome. I know side bets go on all the time in other sports, but I thought once the match/game started, the one thing you can't bet on, is the outcome. Weird.

Plus I thought I read somewhere that her Dad said something to her about retiring, seeing as she would not be able to play the next round. It was caught on someone's off-camera microphone. That's when all the bets started rolling in.

That's what I heard, too... Knowing she would not be able to play in the next round, she retired in order to let her opponent move on. Most considered it a pretty classy thing to to, but with the mic picking up Dad's comments, the move was being investigated as part of some imaginary betting plot. And yes, in some places (including Britain, I believe...), it is legal to bet on a sporting event in progress, hence the investigation.

And I want her, too....
