Bradford asked 49ers QB for advice

To better prepare to make a decision whether to have shoulder surgery, University of Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford placed a call to another quarterback who has been there, done that. "We've been trading phone calls," Alex Smith said Thursday. "He called, twice. When you've torn ligaments in your shoulder, it takes time to heal. It's different than other positions. When you take hits like that, it impairs your ability to throw the ball."

I just hope he's not taking advice on a future NFL career.

October 23, 2009  10:18 AM ET

Hmmmm.... would the NCAA ban his shoulder and allow the rest of him to play?

October 23, 2009  11:31 AM ET

Getting QB advice from Alex Smith goes something like this:
Play great in college.
Sign a huge NFL contract.
Play awful in a few NFL games, get benched, then sit and count your money.

people just be honest! everybody thinks Bradford is plain stupid for coming back! I actually doubt if he is smart enough to play QB! to top that he asked an advice from the failure Alex Smith!!! the biggest bust in the NFL history! how stupid does that sound gentlemen?

October 23, 2009  12:09 PM ET

Not the best guy to go to for advice Ales Smith. Call Deion or Lebron they seem to be involved in everybody's business.

Not nearly as stupid as your remark, which is totally beside the point when you are asking about a medical condition and not how to play the game.

October 23, 2009  02:39 PM ET

I hope Bradford doesn't lie to the NCAA about this conversation or else it's death penalty city for his college career. Well if it isn't already anyway.

October 23, 2009  03:45 PM ET

Bradford will have same pro career as last QB to win heisman from OU. he can't read a defense efficiently, he has to look to sidelines for everything.

October 23, 2009  04:27 PM ET

I still think norv turner killed alex. As he can't teach anyone how to play.

October 23, 2009  05:07 PM ET

Bradford has to look to the sidelines every play because that's what the offensive coordinator wants. Fairly certain that no other QB in college has free rein to call any play that he wants without input from the coach.

October 23, 2009  07:07 PM ET

Is it always as bad as it was in the BCS championship game last year? I felt embarrassed for College Football that OU was put in the game and their QB blankly stared to the sidelines for about 40 seconds between each play. Very Junior Varsity for a supposed #2 nationally ranked program.

October 23, 2009  07:39 PM ET

Since A. Smith had the same type of injury, calling him to find out about what he did/is doing to rehab doesn't seem like a bad idea.
Looking to the sidelines for a play is akin to looking at a wristband with dozens of plays on it or having a audio set in the helmet...the idea is someone tells you a play and you do it (either by memory, reading it or getting the call directly from the line.)

1) Bradford said all along his dream was to play for OU. So yes he will go to the nfl. But he stayed to continue playing for the one team he truly wanted to play for.

2) He called Alex Smith for advise on whether to have surgery. Why? Smith had THE SAME surgery.

3) Smith is the biggest bust ever? Heard of Ryan Leaf? Smith is a bust. And yet he is no where near the level of bust as Leaf.

So I guess you didn't see him play at all his first two years then? You don't throw for 4,720 yards, 50 td's against 8 int's, all in ONE season and not be able to read a defense. That was a dumb, DUMB, statement.

October 23, 2009  10:46 PM ET

Be careful, Sam, you've seen what the Nat'l Communists Against Athletes have done to Dez Bryant.

FAIL! Stop hating, even a Okie State guy (we despise the land grabbers) can see this guy has all the talent in the world.

Yeah, they let you guy and program walk all the while knowing Mr. Bush bribed people. What a country!

October 23, 2009  11:29 PM ET

Smith hasn't performed well, there is no doubt, but the 49ers have also been a disaster too. How many offensive coordinators did they go through when he was playing? They hardly had an offensive line. Prior to the injury Smith did show some signs of progress. During the rough stretch that he had with Mike Nolan, his childhood best friend also committed suicide. I'm not defending the guy, but I also don't think that anyone that was placed in that situation would have done well.

whats done is done, he came back, and he got hurt. Feel bad for the kid... Matt Leinart did the same thing bc he luved college so much and wanted another title. There si a risk if you are a 1st round pick.
But either way, Bradford is getting drafted and will make millions, he will just have about 18 million guaranteed rather than 35 million. But that 18 mill is nice, more than what most of us makes with graduate degrees and everything. I know he didnt want to go out like this, i feel bad for the dude.
