Safina to reclaim No. 1 ranking

Russia's Dinara Safina will replace Serena Williams as the No. 1 tennis player on the women's tour after the American held the top spot for two weeks. Safina, who has never won a major, will overtake Williams, the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, when the rankings are published Oct. 26, the WTA Tour said in an e-mailed statement today. The women are five points apart. Safina moves back to No. 1 because the points earned at the 2008 year-end Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha come off, the WTA said. During the 2009 season, Safina has earned more ranking points than any other player on the tour by winning titles in Rome, Madrid and Portoroz and reaching six finals in total, the tour said.

What a joke.

Yep. It is a joke. If Serena would try to play tennis for more than just four tournaments a year she would be ranked #1. She is the joke. Dinara just shows up, week after week, and does the best she can.

Courierfan, I don't disagree with you. I guess it just depends on what the number 1 ranking is supposed to mean. If it is supposed to identify the best player then I don't think it is succeeding.

No question. And not that I agree with her scheduling philosophy but I'm sure Serena is more than aware that at the end of the day, your place in history is defined by your number - and variety - of majors victories, not the number of of weeks you spent at #1.

Hard to see Safina winning at Doha .... PLEASE HIRE A NEW COACH!!!

and Difficult to name her the world number one after her Wimbledon results, but let??s see

OK, I'm lost.

Vomiting. What a waste year 2009 of female tennis.

October 25, 2009  03:48 AM ET

rankings are only for people who don't understand the game anyway..

October 25, 2009  04:27 AM ET

Maybe Serena will shove a tennis ball down the throat of the official who gave her the #2 ranking if they don't give her what she wants.......a #1 ranking. I hope she is not allowed to play the Australian Open. Then we'll hear people who have never even watched a tennis match go blah blah blah about how horrible it is for Serena and how she's sooooooooooo mistreated. Boo Hoo. If she wants to be ranked #1 she should play more. Oooops she did and lost. To Clijsters. What a burn. Serena needs to take lessons in etiquette from her sweet sister.

October 25, 2009  05:31 AM ET

Based on the ranking systems actual conditions Dinara Safina deserves the nr 1 ranking. No question about it.

The ranking system is a balance of quantity and quality of tennis played over a year period, and Dinara Safina is the player who best satisfies this balance apparently.

October 25, 2009  08:53 AM ET

The rankings are meaningless other than as a basis for seedings. Tennis history will remember that Serena won all those majors and she won them being seeded #1, #7 and even unseeded. There seems to be this unwarranted hatred by some towards Safina. The rankings aren't her fault. And there are several players who didn't win majors until late in their careers-Davenport, Capriati, Goran Ivanisovic...so it's not fair, and may not be wise, to write Safina off just yet.

Tennis fans are mostly all haters, as evidenced by the tenor of this debate (and most on this site.)

first off, anyone unhappy with the rankings should take it up with the tour. Safina just shows up and plays. If the system is flawed, she shouldn't have to take the backlash. Secondly, who cares about rankings. It's not like college football where only the "top 2" get a shot at the title.

GrandSalms are not the only tournaments. There are hundreds of tournaments that should be played. I thin Safina deserves to be Number 1
