Ford Motorsports' new FR9 engine will make its debut in the Sprint Cup Series next weekend at Talladega, Ala. Roush Fenway Racing drivers David Ragan and Matt Kenseth will utilize the engine in the Amp Energy 500. Driver Greg Biffle said it will take some time to phase in the engines, particularly if the proposed merger between Yates Racing and Richard Petty Motorsports is completed and that organization moves to Ford.

Can someone tell me what the real difference is between the engines? They all start with a block that needs to be punched out, the specs are set by NASCAR. They then put NASCAR spec'd heads on the NASCAR spec'd block and on and up from there. I feel that it comes down to the engine builder more than the manufacturer these days. Am I wrong?

Somebody out there has alot more money in their pocket

this new block Ford has made is designed specifically for NASCAR.... oil and water passages have been revamped, so the block can withstand more temperature, thus allowing teams to run more tape on the nose, allowing more speed and downforce on the nose.... Chevy, Dodge, and Toyota already are running "hotter" engines.... they can function with water temps of 250- 275 degrees.....

Diggler, thats ALWAYS been the case..... for over 60 years now, its the man, not the manufacturer!!!!! every engine builder has their own"secrets" to speed and power.....

Why bring out a new type of engine at this time of the season??
I would think you would keep it under wraps until spring,,beats me.

Hope they use a different crank manufacturer then the MoPars -- needs to stay in one piece! LOL

October 24, 2009  01:29 PM ET

Ooops -- forgot to say the reason Ford decided on Tally is the engines don't crank the REVs like other tracks and remain pretty much the same RPM ... this is a lot easier on them. Good way to test. But if they really wanted to put it through the paces -- pick out a track where the RPM is just short of 9500 and down to 6500 ... this up and down is what kills the damn things.

Understood > thanks for the expanation.

I hope that doesn't happen -- Ford needs a boost in the series and this is the opportunity to do it ... on the dyno these engines make the HP and with the lower RPM at Talladaga should be there at the end of the show. They have done some design things to the engine that are NOT mainstream -- so we will see if it works.

How many will go BOOM? I don't know, maybe two seeing as there are only two running according to the the story.

Survey Says!.........................#1 answer!!! Ding, ding, ding, ding!
Thanks, that make sense since there isn't a lot they can really do with them other than that.
The engine builder has always been the most important, however it used to be that some engines were easier to make horsepower than others. Thus the division amongst our brethren about Chevy, Ford , Mopar. A buddy of mine swears that it is easier to make more HPs from a Ford, however a little more expensive. Chevy has always been the cheap man's way to HP. This is all non-relevant at the cup level but, it still seems to play out at the local dirt tracks. Mostly Chevys out there around here.

my pappy always said, " any idiot can build a Chevrolet!!!" Ford is more expensive, but yes, you do get more out of it.... GM people will counter that the Camaro always beat a Mustang, yet they had to put a 350 versus a 302 in the Mustang.... you break out a 351 in one, the Bowtie Brigade holler shananigans....

And I ask -- who did it to Ford? The answer is -- Ford ... kept screwin' around and trying to come up with an engine to out do the SBC and everytime they did the damn thing was not compatible with any other Ford motor. They finally figured it out with the "mini" Rat motors. If they would have stuck to the Cleveland design they would have spent a lot less money and the general gearheads would have embraced it ... To bad your dad didn't tell ya' the "idiots" were winning races and the Ford troops were **** the left rear mammary gland.

October 26, 2009  02:09 AM ET

lmao.... yes the Cleveland block is way more power friendly!!!!! these newer stroker kits for the Windsors isn't bad, either.... you can get some really nice numbers on the track, and the dyno.....
