Source: Benson never wanted to be a Bear

07:54 AM ET 10.25 | The fraud started on Day One when a city conditioned to worship running backs thought the tears rolling down Cedric Benson's cheeks on draft day were genuine products of pride and joy over coming to Chicago. In fact, as a source close to Benson later related to illustrate the root of his bad feelings toward the Bears front office, he was crying because he was upset the team drafted him at all. The source who had spoken to Benson on draft day said the running back immediately feared the Bears wouldn't offer him a contract as long or as rich as what he felt he deserved, a bone of contention that ultimately would lead to a 36-day holdout. That initial reaction by Benson suggested, in his heart, he never truly wanted to be a Bear until it was clear they were cutting him. That always will be the lasting impression of his lousy three-plus years here.

Ouch.
That is the problem with players coming out of school these days.
Have not done a thing in the NFL but by god I deserve the world without having earned it.
Get out there show us what you are worth and then comes pay day.
I think they show get league minimum for 2 years till they have showed that they are worth a decent contract and not the way it is now where they sign 10 , 20 30 million dollar contracts and have not sean the field.
The team is then hurt because of the cap and they sometimes suck. Ryan Leaf comes to mind and a few others

A bust in Chicago, but he ain't too shabby now in Cincy.

This has to be 100% rumor. I watched that draft and saw this kid cry on camera. He sure as hell didn't look upset to me.

I tried to find a video of that interview on youtube... nothing to be found. It's easy to take an event that happened five years ago and put a new twist on it. People forget how it really happened. We're more likely to believe the BS that the media pumps out. But at this point, IMO, the rumors that Chicago tried to "blackball" Cedric Benson are starting to hold more water.

Good stuff for game day.

October 25, 2009  08:43 AM ET

Yup, this is kind of a lame story. Now if he starts crying during a press conference in defense of his quarterback *sniff*, we'll truly have something to make fun of him for.

October 25, 2009  08:44 AM ET

Maybe he wouldn't have been crying on draft day if Chicago has chosen to add a roof when they re-modeled Soldier Field.

October 25, 2009  08:45 AM ET

Yeah, sucks to be selected to play a game and make millions of dollars doing something you enjoy.

Poor guy.....

Sick of hearing about Cedric Benson. The last post was about him crying and the bears trying to run him out of Chicago and not supporting him. What do you expect when he was the reason he drove Thomas Jones out of Chicago, produced like a second string high schooler and was in trouble every other week....

Shut up Benson. Chump.

"had" chosen. My hand was shaking just thinking about sitting in those stands in December...

No surprise here.

When the "honeymoon" ends in Cincy, he'll be unhappy to be a Bengal and the cycle will repeat itself.

Enjoy "Second-hand Ced" while you can.

Don't care.

Sounds like a sour grapes story from a crappy publication. Isn't the Tribune bankrupt?

I was going to note the same thing - the Tribune doesn't like Ced much, do they?

A few people in Chicago probably don't like Cedric much. This kind of rumour just adds fuel to that fire.

You mean the Trib is in on the conspiracy?

October 25, 2009  10:59 AM ET

It's all about The Trib holding the Ced man down!

What's this about now? It didn't make sense to me. What was it trying to say? Wow, I can't seem to figure it out.
