Why Islanders are unlikely to move

08:21 AM ET 10.25 | Understand, the Lighthouse Project may determine whether Charles Wang wants to keep the Islanders on Long Island (or in neighboring precincts such as Brooklyn or Queens), but unless Gary Bettman has perjured himself repeatedly in the Coyotes' court case in Phoenix, the NHL is committed to keeping clubs in their home markets if buyers can be found for them. It is impossible to believe that prospective purchasers would not step up to keep the Islanders in New York as long as a new arena is in the equation.

If you own a franchise, or at least the controlling interest in a franchise and you feel that the team can't compete because of its venue or over-saturation in the market then you have every right to move them to city where that team could prosper.

The Islanders have a lease at the Nassau County Coliseum ... a) what is its duration, and b) what are the penalties to break it?

Also, the Isles have the 'golden handcuffs' of its SportsChannel New York cable contract, which nets $1 Million per year and has a few more years left on it. That alone, makes me believe that this team will end up in Queens or Brooklyn. Besides the fact that neither Nassau nor Suffolk County (next door) have the money to subsidize a new arena, facts that nobody will dare admit.

Wang is just bluffing with all this move talk so he can get the city to chip in or pay for a new arena, kinda like what happened in Pittsburgh.

Except Pittsburgh isn't paying for the Consol Center, gambling revenue and PA is. Also Lemiuex was promised support for a new arena when he bought the Pens and got the run around.

The situation in Long Island is that Wang wants to build and entire development including much more than just an arena. His issues have to do with the politicians of Long Island not wanting any development there. Remember this is the same part of the US where people are trying to stop wind farms off the coast because they wind mills will be something like 1cm high on the horizon.

possibly because no one wants them. Any questions?

October 25, 2009  02:27 PM ET

when did they sign a deal with Kansas? Wang's development is somewhat similar to the one made by kraft of the patriots. With this economy u would think the could get the funds to do the project and create more jobs in both the short and long term. It seams very silly the city hasn't gone forward with this thing. It looks pretty cool. Check out the islander website, I like the idea of a town built around a stadium. As opposed to a slum built around a stadium.

But think about the great islanders fans.

Kelster KC has his facts mixed up. A deal was never reached between Wang and Kansas City. Remember what I said earlier, this is just a power play between Wang and city politicians. The team will not move to KC and my city will be used for the third time by another NHL franchise (Pittsburgh, Nashville and New York).

Wang shouldn't hang his head over this one. He should stand erect.

October 25, 2009  08:53 PM ET

Isn't Wang Chung offering to fund the whole Lighthouse Project too?

October 25, 2009  09:56 PM ET

I'm surprised Wang hasn't peddled them already. Talk about guys that might be willing to trade teams...

October 26, 2009  09:09 AM ET

The last ten words of that article say it all 'as long as a new arena is in the equation'.
You can have 100 people wanting to buy the team but if no one wants to build an adequate facility they won't make money.

October 26, 2009  10:03 AM ET

wang wants to move because he isnt making money boo hooo. Jim ballsillie wanted to do the same thing with the coyotes but he was called a radical with poor morales

Yes, It is all Beaurocracy. The TV deal with MSG is what will ultimatly keep the Isles in the NY metro area. They will not get that type of money ANYWHERE else in the league.

October 26, 2009  10:36 AM ET

anywhere in North America I mean

And, you know what? The Islanders wouldn't do any worse in Kansas City than they have the last 3 decades on Long Island.

They look like Buffalo Bills fans, minus the vomit-stained jerseys. However, it might be early in the game, give them time.
