Coach K: New rule will be a joke

Count Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski among the objectors to the new rule that specifies an unmarked zone under the basket where referees will call only blocks, not charges, on offensive players. "It'll be a joke, because it will become a joke," Krzyzewski said at the ACC's Operation Basketball media event Sunday afternoon. Krzyzewski agrees with the intent of the rule, because he believes players shouldn't be called for charging underneath the basket. But he said the no-charging zone - which extends from the backboard to the front of the rim - should be marked on the floor.

I agree with K here. Its nuts to have a rule that is so discretionary. Of course by not having it marked will help all the sports talk shows with people calling in to complain that the officials were calling unfairly against their team.

With all the bad press going on with the SEC F'ball officiating lately, I would think the ACC would be smart to leave nothing to interpretation.

It will hurt krat when his team doesn't get all those charging calls. Flops should be penalized...right Krat? The season hasn't even started and he is complaining to the refs.

he's pissed because he will only get a fraction of the calls he used to get.....im not sure who is more notorious for flopping, duke basketball, or the italian national soccer team....

No kidding.. his team was the only team who use to benefit from these type of situations.. Hopefully they ban slapping on the court next lol

Its ironic how you complain about Coach K complaining before the season starts. Meanwhile, in actuality, you're the one who is complaining about him before he's complained, making you the sole, pre-emptive complainer.

In other words, forget about it. Your credibility is ZERO.

k is mad that he won't get all those flop charges anymore. 'aah the good ol' days of shane floppier' should be the bubble caption for the picture above. the young and more talented boys in baby blue from down the road are gonna do a repeat of j.j. and sheldon's senior day party all over again.

imagine if k had italians, instead of polish players how much they would flop? oh wait, valvano got all the italian guys back in the 80s and they're actually were pretty tough on the hoops court (corchiani, gugliotta, del negro, etc) but you're right they are diving drama queens on the football pitch.

Agreed. I don't know what Coach K is complaining about. The refs give his players the benefit of the calls anyways and this won't change that at all. Flop away.

October 26, 2009  09:43 AM ET

uh oh, a rule that would make things a little more uniform, therefore evening the playing field against his super-floppers... coach k cant allow that!

October 26, 2009  09:44 AM ET

I hate to break it to everyone, but the only thing Coach K is complaining about is that there is no line to distinguish exactly what can be called a block/charge. If you noticed, he AGREED with the rule, so he apparently isn't complaining about it, and is not therefore worried whether his team gets those calls under the basket or not. It's just when you leave it up to the officials to determine on the fly at full speed, they will miss some calls, and in tight ball games, some missed calls can be crucial. Those calls will then be amplified in every broadcast when the announcers complain about how badly they missed the call when they get to look at in super-slow-motion. He's wanting to eliminate that by putting a line on the court to show this is EXACTLY where we can call ONLY blocks, then no one can question it, and the refs don't have to worry about creating an invisible line in their mind. If the line is on the court where the refs can see it, the less likely they screw it up and its less chances for them to get reamed by everyone...he's actually looking out for the refs.

I agree. This is going to kill Duke.....Momentum always seems to change at key points of the game after one of their imfamous flops! This could be the greatest video of all time:

A great compiliation of Dukee flops

I don't understand. Is a charge a foul or is it not? It can't be a foul almost everywhere but not in this little spot. What a dumb rule change. You're asking moving players and referees to watch the ball and the play and still know for sure where exactly all parts of all players' bodies are in relation to the rim and backboard at all times? Ludicrous. Painting the floor differently would not help either. Either charging is a foul or it isn't. If you want to make faking/flopping a technical that is called more often, fine. But don't start saying "you can do this here, but not there, and that there, but not here." It's absurd.

October 26, 2009  09:53 AM ET

BTW, I hate Duke more than any other college team, so don't mistake my disdain for this rule change as a pro-Duke position. It isn't. I just think the new rule sounds dumb and literally impossible to call when players are sprinting around the court in all directions.

October 26, 2009  09:55 AM ET

GO BLUE DEVILS. Coach K agrees with change, he just don't want the officials to decide when to call it a block or charge. They can just guess when it's a block or charge. Riff IN oHIO

October 26, 2009  10:03 AM ET

Its hard not to agree with Krzyzewski. However, I can't help but think about all the times his players jump in front of a guy driving the basket and then get thrown backwards like they were shot in the chest with a cannonball, even though they were barely touched. But then again, its Duke. He won't have to worry about his players getting called for fouls under the hoop, so this rule means nothing to him.

NO, he just knows that trying to get charges is such a big part of his teams game, that HE WANTS the zone painted on the floor so his players know not to enter it.

actually, there is a lot of discretion used by the refs.....think about goaltending.
