Toronto FC in for shakeup

06:58 AM ET 10.26 | Toronto FC is in for an off-season shakeup. Tom Anselmi, chief executive officer of TFC owner Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, said general manager Mo Johnston, who has been at the helm since TFC joined MLS in 2007, will remain in charge. Even though the club's all-time record is 25-41-24, it's headed in the right direction, Anselmi insisted. The future of the coaching staff, headed by interim boss Chris Cummins, is much less secure. And, when their young team proved so unable to compete in the biggest game it has ever played, that's hardly a surprise.

Ya' think?

October 26, 2009  09:05 AM ET

i still think they are being a bit tough on Cummins.... Half a season is in no way enough time to take someone else's team and turn them into contenders...

if TFC are looking for a coach, they can take DH... fire fans wont mind

October 26, 2009  09:35 AM ET

Cummins could have won the job last weekend and they lost 5 to nil. Can him and bring in a decent coach.

Since I don't follow MLS as closely as some of you do, my memory on things can become pretty hazy. We're they in better shape before he took over, at least as far as standings go? For some reason I recall that, but I could be wrong.

Otherwise, you're dead on about the difficulty in taking over a team. Look how long it's taken Hyndman to reshape FC Dallas and get them competitive.

Eh, yes and no. With the team they had near the end of the season, they should have pulled off a playoff spot. if I'm the owner, I see the season as a failure and a failed team requires change. If not Cummins, who else?

they were strong both at the beginning and end of the season... capable of striking at anytime, but also capable of blowing hard....

1 game off of making the playoffs... in fact they were pretty solid shape until that horrific loss to NJRB.... there were 7 teams in the league in the same position this past weekend... if TFC won, they would have made the playoffs, and Cummings would have been hailed as a Hero in Toronto.. Taking TFC to their FIRST playoff birth.... i simply think this is a bit harsh, and unless they are willing to dish out the $$ for another coach, they wont find anything that much better...

to be fair to NJRB, they have been playing stronger and better since the JCO dismissal

i agree TFC should have beat them, and im certain that the 5-0 loss is probably playing a role in said talks... if it were simply a 1-0 game, i think even then there would be a different tune sung...

I don't follow MLS the way some of you do here, although I buy the Direct Kick just to support the league every year. But how does a team with Toronto's talent let a club like New England who's been decimated by injuries all year get past them, never mind the total collapse in New York? Smells like coaching to me, with a dash of some poor personnel decisions. Every time I watch Chad Barrett I just don't get this guy as a striker. Maybe it's me, but he doesn't seem to get it.

its true TFC's inconsistency has been their downfall...

NE might be decimated by injury, but they are still a capable team and have always shown their worth.... outside of TightShirt and Ralston, who else are they missing??

as for Barrett, he brings energy and can perform from time to time... basically if you dont have a better option... scarily enough he's one of their better performing forwards, and perhaps thats their big issue... they've expected their midfield (DeRo especially) to produce all season... Barrett is an athletic player (who dehydrates too quickly) with small amounts of skill... he would be a solid supersub for TFC, if they found a better striker to take his spot... as a Fire fan i wasnt devastated by his departure

this is of course we are assuming Canada is in fact USA Jr.

truly its only a matter of time before they become the next state... and just think of the economical impact of having to make all new flags and everyone in canada and US purchasing them

Toronto just had no consistent finishers. Their problem all year was the final 18 yards. Barrett and Vitti just couldn't get it done. When you two top strikers have 7 goals for the season I don't think you going to win enough to make the playoffs. That was the crack on Vitti before he came. Beautiful player to watch in the open field but no finish in the box.

Caught all or part of four MLS games this weekend. It was a very good weekend for soccer. Seattle/FCD and KC/DCU games were probably the best I saw.

ANother Buffalonian here, and this is true. Never want to say that "Canada is just another U.S. State."

Translation please.

Its their annoying fans, who thinks they are the best fans in mls. Every time they come to giants stadium they bring a banner that has the word Ss Hh Ii Tt Ee. Along with their annoying generic British football chants. Their fans actually hung a banner that said last **** out turn off this Ss Hh Ii Tt Ee. When you are a fan of a team who has NEVER made the playoffs down 0-4 to the worst team in the league wth are you thinking.

Giants stadium may not be ideal for soccer but it has hosted bigger soccer events in the last calendar year than that little turf field in toronto.
