Why Leafs-Ducks swap may not fly
While recent reports suggest the Leafs might be interested in a Jean-Sebastien Giguere-for-Vesa Toskala swap, Giguere's cap hits -- $6 million this season, $7 million in 2011 -- makes that a tough sell for Toronto.

Not sure the money really matters to the Leafs. I didn't look it up, but I think Toskala makes about $5 mill a year - if he does, what would stop them? What's an extra million dollars if you are getting a goalie who will actually make saves and not cost you games?
I would think the bigger issue would be the Ducks maybe not wanting to make the trade because it wouldn't open up enough Cap space for them - if I'm right about Toskala's salary, that is.

Brilliant reporting from the Toronto Sun... too bad they are blatantly wrong. It is impossible for a player to have different cap hits during the same contract. The money they refer to is his SALARY, not his CAP HIT which is actually 6M.

There is a salary cap... of course the money matters to the Leafs, it has to!
Toskala's cap hit is 4M compared to Giguere's 6M.... 2M cap saving certainly sounds worth it to me. Also, Anaheim could turf him on the LTIR for the remainder of the year and thus free up 6M of cap space both this year and next while having Hiller in net. There is absolutely no reason for Anaheim not to make this trade... at least not in financial terms.

why would you trade a 6mil back up for a 5 mil back up. makes no sense. they both aren't very good NHL goalies. if Jiggy ever had to take off his plywood chest guard he wouldn't make any saves at all. Tosk simply cant make a save........hahahaha leafs suck...again

The 6M backup has two years on his contract... the 4M backup has one year.
The 4M backup is an injury-case and could thus be turfed on LTIR for the remainder, thus negating his cap hit.
So why would you NOT make that trade? And really, how hard is it to look up salaries and cap hits?! www.nhlnumbers.com

I don't see this happening at all, the Leafs need scoring not another so-so goalie. Gus will be fine. But on the other hand if the Ducks want Toskala they can have him for a bag of pucks.

You are an IDIOT. Before you open your mouth do the research dumptruck. You can have different cap hits every year once again another brilliant AMERICAN lending us their KNOWLEDGE!!!!!

Oh, and just how is that possible? Unless the two years are on different contracts, it is impossible per the CBA! Why do you think there are such weird cap hits like Lucic's $4,083,333 on his next contract? Cause he is making 4M, 4M and 4.25M... guess what that averages to?!
Way to prove you know nothing of your sport moron.

You can't just randomly proclaim a guy onto the LTIR if it ain't legit, ****. Toskala is only kind of hurt, he's more awful than he is hurt. The Ducks would be stuck with a 'tender who can't get in front of a puck, rather than having a former Conn Smythe Trophy winner in their midst.
Also, I can't be bothered to look up salaries and cap hits - or anything else - I'm not on here to do research (my university days are behind me, thankfully), I'm on here to throw out my opinion on these types of topics/get updates on what's going on in sports. I use only knowledge I already have for my posts, or I ask the question when needed - like Toskala's cap hit, for instance. Sorry I don't have time to go through my encyclopedia before posting.

If you are so knowledgeable about the NHL CBA, please show me ONE contract where the cap hit varies from year to year.
Oh, and may I recommend that you actually read the CBA before spouting off... section 50.5(d) would be particularly pertinent.

I know you can't just throw a guy on LTIR. However, Toskala has a long history of injuries and the chances are that something is not right or some surgery is required... perfect excuse for LTIR/
As for not being willing to look up salaries even though it requires all of a minute to do so, then so be it. Just invalidates any opinion you present since it is based in incorrect information. But if you want people to ignore your opinions due to lack of accuracy, that is up to you.

Seeing as I doubt you could understand the CBA if you attempted to read it, may I recommend instead you use the 'illustrations' on pages 204 and 205.

They are about as simplified as possible... hopefully thats low enough for you.

Bobby's right, Canada 2010...not to get myself involved, but you're off-base on this one.
This is why a guy gets signed to an 11 year contract - his first few seasons are at $8-9 million a year, and he makes $1-2 million in the final years. The Cap Hit itself works out to be about $7 million for each year in the contract, and that's how it is allotted in the CBA and how the NHL calculates a player's value against the team's cap. It doesn't change from year to year, even as his salary does. The Cap Hit is the average salary the player receives over the course of the contract.

And I said all of that without having to look it up. Maybe people shouldn't take what I just said at my word because I didn't have to do research...
Look back, and you will find I rarely make incorrect or inaccurate statements my friend.

I just don't see the point of throwing out off-base comments like the Toskala one when it takes all of 30 seconds to get the actual data.

It wasn't that off-base. I was a million off, but the point was still valid; is a goalie who can actually stop the puck worth TWO million more than one who can't? Every day, if you ask me.
