As another NBA season opens, the Lakers are positioned well, with arguably the best player and coach in the league. Forbes magazine thinks the Lakers have something else: the most overpaid player in the league, Andrew Bynum. Tom Van Riper writes, "Leading the pack [of most overpaid players] is Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum, a first-round pick out of high school four years ago who's churned out nine points and six rebounds in 21 minutes per game as a pro."

How about Eddie? Jermaine? Kenyon? and Larry Hughes?

These people are all more expensive than Andrew.

October 27, 2009  06:41 AM ET

wow... this is the dumbest statement ever..... Bynum when healthy is a top 5 center, before getting hurt last year completely dominated duncan... So far this preseason he hass been an absolute beast... if he can avoid his teammates taking him out he will have a monster year... he should be single teamed at best with pau and bryant getting doubles... he could be a 20-10 man this year... He has even been beating his guy up and down the court which will add a few easy dunks per game. There is no hole in this lakers team going to be fun

This is also stupid because this is 1st year being paid what he is, previous he was on the rookie pay scale and you wonder why wall street is in trouble when forbes cant even read data. Maybe wait til after the season morons before u claim him to be overpaid.

October 27, 2009  07:20 AM ET

Yup, this was a dumb article. Slow news day I think...Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

October 27, 2009  07:24 AM ET

It's NOT a dumb article.

Bynum has a lot of potential, which is why the Lakers are paying top dollar for him.
However, in the process of waiting for him to reach his potential, they are dishing out a lot more than he's worth.

He is definitely overpaid right now. All the comments above talk about what he COULD be and what he's CAPABLE of, but he has yet to realize that potential. In the meantime, the overpayment is the Lakers' way of telling him that they want him to stick around for the long haul.

October 27, 2009  07:38 AM ET

Although I do feel Bynum isn't living up to what he is being paid, he is being paid on potential. Still, at $12.5 million, he's a bargain compared to Jermaine at $23 million and Larry Hughes at $13.7 million. Let's also remember, Marbury was making $20.8 million and only behind Jason kid in terms of PG's salaries.

October 27, 2009  07:40 AM ET

Prior to getting injured, I believe he was close to averaging 20 and 10 . And during the pre season games, as Jeffro mentioned, he is a an absolute BEAST.

Overpad to me is when you're not playing to your full potential, WILLFULLY (ie. VC, Curry, possibly Carlos Boozer who likes to coast most of the time.)

In Bynum's case, he was playing like a marquee player before he got sidelined by the injuries. I believes he's putting in the work and effort to get better and the results speak for itself..

So I don't think the article was fair to him in that aspect.

October 27, 2009  07:47 AM ET

Just an FYI this is the 1st year he is getting paid on the new deal he signed, yes he did sign it after 08' season but didnt come into effect until this year... Bynum made 2.8 last year so how on earth is he overpaid for something he hasnt even done yet... Cant believe this came from LA Times maybe they just wrote in hopes of motivating Bynum.... who knows but Forbes should know how to research a little better before making themselves look like idiots, but they have done such a good job of it lately why stop now, just another example of why we found ourselves in the crap storm we are now.

October 27, 2009  07:49 AM ET

Wow! You've got to go some distance to be more OVERPAID than Gilbert Arenas!

October 27, 2009  07:50 AM ET

This is why they need to stick with money related articles. Sad they left out Curry who would be my number one choice.
MAC Hoop and Jeffro are right but call him a Rabid beast. He was on fire before that last injury.

October 27, 2009  08:01 AM ET

Articles like this explain why I generally do not read business magazines to stay current on the NBA. Hey Forbes editors: better your next article on overpaid guys is about which Wall St exec got the most for doing the least.

October 27, 2009  08:02 AM ET

There are not enough shots in a game to get this guy 20/10. unless you mean 20 turn overs and 10 fouls. haaaaaaa.

October 27, 2009  08:06 AM ET

Bynum is not even close to the most overpaid.

In fairness to all the guys you mentioned...

... they've had careers.. various points during their tenure where they have produced on a high level.

Bynum has yet to reach that level of production.

I agree with all your comments...

... before his injury he was on 20/10 pace.

Also, VC is NOTORIOUS for missing half a season, and playing half-heartedly the other half.

Here's 5 he's not better than when healthy - Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, Al Jefferson, Yao Ming, and Shaq. So far he is still all potential.

The fact that Eddie Curry is getting paid anything makes him overpaid. In Arenas' defense he has been injured so I would hold off on calling him overpaid just yet. Wait until after the season. I'd call the Wizards FO unwise signing him to that big a contract given his injury issues.

October 27, 2009  08:38 AM ET

Grant Hill, TMac, Arenas.....
Yeah they were injured, but obviously at the end of the day, overpaid for just sitting on the bench...or on the couch!

Eddie Curry is the winner...
