05:38 AM ET 10.27 | One massive recruiting weekend continues to pay dividends for Notre Dame. Giovanni Bernard, one of the recruits jam-packing the sideline for the Irish-USC game, has committed orally to play for Notre Dame starting in 2010, according to multiple reports. The 5-foot-9-inch, 198-pound Bernard plays for St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., one of the nation's premier high school programs. Bernard is a four-star player and the nation's No. 162 recruit, according to Rivals, and the No. 12 running back.

Is that a recent picture of Jabba? Has he lost weight?

October 27, 2009  07:48 AM ET

Not sure when that was taken, but contrary to post that he has gotten even bigger, he actually has lost weight this year. I know it's hard to tell because even though he's about 30 pounds less...he's still bigger then all of his starting offensive lineman. He's done this because of the new knee, they say he has been doing physical therapy in a pool quite often. Can you beleive it, he's actually exercising? Charlie....exercising, it's almost like a oxy moron!

ESPN carried one of his HS games that I saw. Kid looked impressive, but I can't tell how much was him, how much was O-line, how much was other team's D doubling up on receivers, etc. St. T dominated every aspect of the game.

Will be interesting to see if Jabba can start getting his highly rated recruits to start playing up to potential. Assuming ND's 9-3 or even 8-4 this season, I assume he comes back for 2010.

If Jabba continues to lose weight, will the median elevation of South Bend rise back up to its 2004 level?

October 27, 2009  08:02 AM ET

Wonder what head coach he will play for at Notre Dame?

October 27, 2009  08:10 AM ET

So we have an oral commit...get ready for a dozen or so posts originally pointing out..."it's a long way to signing day". Damnit...I just typed it, so I guess that's one.

Based on the name of the kid's school, he's probably Catholic, may well have dreamed of playing for Notre Dame since he was six or seven. Jabba's prob'ly got this one.

Nice contribution to the sports story Einstein.........kid is a good back but then again. who isn't a star on that team.

October 27, 2009  08:20 AM ET

Its not Oxymoron. Its the OxyContin from the knee causing him to lose weight.

Dunno that NY was makin' fun of anyone. I do know that 1) your post ended with a question that was incorrectly punctuated and 2) we don't need angry, attacking ass-hole comments from ****ing newbies. Please remain civil or go the **** away.

Notre Shame will never win another national championship, or I'm not Pecosleo Marchibrota.

October 27, 2009  08:29 AM ET

Whoooo..had to reread that one...at first glance I thought they said ND i.e Weis landed on the poor kid. I know Charlie and Co are in panic mode but that's no way to land recruits fatboy

Never's a long time, dude. I don't see it happening in the next six years. I have no clue what the CFB landscape will look like after that. But, I suspect, neither do you.

Agreed. Their heyday is over. We are witnessing the highwater mark of this program. Kids today don't care about ND's history and tradition. And even though I am not a fan of ND, I am a fan of college football and enjoy its rich history, so thinking about ND in that way doesn't give me joy, but it is reality.

All he needs to do is land near the kid. Then he's stuck in Jabba's gravitaional field and cannot escape.

Thanks for the info, I haven't seen any footage of him yet only know what I've read. I hear what you are saying, because it is hard to tell how well HE actually did, because theat St. T team is great every year and has many top recruited players. Actually that is why this is such a big get for ND, because there are 3 or 4 other guys that are in the mix and with Bernard coming to South Bend it might sway some other to follow alone. I.E. the Teo and Toma factor.
I think you'll see over the next year or 2 that the top recruits are coming into form. Contrary to everyone saying how Charlie has had top 5 classes every year he's been there, it's just not true. Between his first season which was a small class and his second season which had a number of defectors because QB and TE were the only spots that were loaded at the time he didn't really have a great class until Jimmy Clausen's year, and they are now juniors. He has been very consistant since then not only getting top players but more importantly spreading out the posistions to build depth. Alright, now that this turned into a novel I get going but for the record I think they run the table the rest of the year. The only games that worry me are the Pitt. and Stanford games because they are both on the road, and Pitt is that only team that I think could actually beat ND. But I really don't think they will if this defenses keep trending up as the year goes on.

I "dunno that he was making fun of anyone" how stupid was that. What does a post talking about someone's weight have to do with college football recruiting" moron

Now your getting the pun. Good job newbie!

P.S. For the record I am both a a bad typer/speller and a Weis/ND fan...so deal with it. Deal with both!
