Leafs may deal Kaberle

08:10 AM ET 10.28 | Tomas Kaberle, it is known, nearly moved to Boston in June, but a prospective deal involving Phil Kessel fell apart in a strange piece of confusion. The Czech blueliner's no-trade clause is back in effect, but the truth is it's not worth much now. If Brian Burke decides Kaberle has to go, he'll be moving this time. So improved play from the smooth-skating defenseman has two possible effects. First, it may help the Leafs start winning more often than every nine games or so. Second, if the victories don't start piling up, Kaberle is the prime chip Burke will have to play when the trade deadline arrives just two days after the conclusion of the Winter Olympics. Other teams will want him. Maybe Boston. Maybe a team like Dallas.

Great, trade away the number one overall pick to Boston (what Toronto's pick will amount to) then give them Kaberle for their 28th overall first round pick. Toronto managerial philosophy at its finest

The Leafs situation is interesting...I wonder if the Sly Irishman is just spinning some of these deals to appear to be doing something productive...Has anyone seen or heard him define what his strategy is for the Leafs other than the typical "Win the Stanley Cup"?

What type of team he wants to put on the Ice??

Brian Burke is fiddling while the Air Canada Centre burns

Um, what? Can Burke now simply ignore no-trade clauses? Last I checked, any trade would have to be approved by Kaberle just as was the case when Toronto could have landed Jeff Carter and Philly's 1st for him. I don't care what Burkie wants to do with him, Kaberle has the final say, PERIOD.

For those Toronto fans, I thought you would appreciate this...

I have NHL 2k10 for the Wii and was annoyed to learn that the updated rosters have Kessel on Toronto but no picks to Boston so I decided to do it myself along with a couple other trades.

Bos (Human) offers Kessel to Tor (Comp) for 2010 1, 2010 2, 2011 1
Rejected. Toronto demanded Aaron Ward and Boston's 2010 1 for that deal.

Tor (Human) offers 2010 1, 2010 2, 2011 1 to Bos (Comp) for Kessel.
Accepted immediately. Burke loses.

Bos (Human) offers Kessel to Tor (Comp) for Kaberle and 2010 1
Note: This is the deadline deal that Burke balked at.
Accepted immediately. Burke loses.

So going by logic (computer after all), Burkie screwed the pooch twice!

October 28, 2009  08:57 AM ET

Burke is a meat head. The leafs deserve him, and once he wrecks just about every thing he can, he will "resign" and ruin another team, like Vancouver, and Anaheim. There new GM's had to fix the cap messes that Burke left them. He is the most overrated GM in hockey today.

seriously dude, nhl 2k10 on wii. That's not even the best hockey game on market. I have that game but also nhl 10 on ps3(my wife is awesome).

nhl 10 blows 2k10 out of water

you don't need a video game to tell you that Burke screwed th pooch on the kessel trade, everyone but Burke thinks that trade was a no brainer for the B's.

Only game for the Wii and I am not about to drop $300+ for a system to use one game.

As for the trades, of course I don't need the computer to tell me Burke screwed up... but the Toronto fans do.

Excellent point... once again your hockey knowledge (or utter lack thereof) shines through in your comment.

According to http://www.nhlscap.com/no_trade.htm#list Kaberle can only be dealt in the summer between the draft and Aug 15th. But it also says he can give a list of 10 teams that he would except a trade to or he can simply waive his no-trade clause.
But remember he was given the opportunity to go to Philly 2 years ago for Jeff Carter and a 1st but he wouldn't waive his NTC.

Thanks JFJ and thanks to the Muskoka 5! Both of whom screwed the Leafs future for the next 10 years (but mostly JFJ).

I am kind of torn here....Canada 2010 seems to bring nothing to the table but irrational and childish posts. On the other hand, BOB, while he does appear to be very knowledgeable about the game of hockey, seems a bit holier-than-thou and has some weird obsession with the Maple Leafs.

BTW how are the graphics on the Wii for NHL 2k10?

October 28, 2009  10:20 AM ET

it is way too soon to consider trading Kaberle. Burke needs to wait this thing out a little longer as Kaberle is too valuable for the Leafs and thdey can't give up hope this early. The good thing now is the Leafs have a lot of good young players..So maybe not having a 1st round pick this upcoming draft is not a bad thing if all the young players pan out..

Agreed completely, was hoping for not a repeat of yesterday, but apparently, as Yogi said, its De Ja Vu all over again.

Burke had his chance to deal him at the draft. Kessel for Kaberle + a 1st.
He should have taken it or at the very least negotiated more maybe he should have tried swapping 1st's with Boston or for a 1st in next years draft.

Kaberle is a good player but Burke's got him over-valved. There is no way he is worth what he is asking for (2 1st round picks apparently).
