Daly's lost even more weight

John Daly is back. Daly, what's left of him, is at the Viking Classic, making his first PGA Tour start since Aug. 23 and only seventh of the year. Wild Thing had announced in early September that he was not going to compete the rest of the year because of a recurring rib injury. But Daly said here that a stem-cell injection has helped heal him and he feels good enough to play again. What's more, Daly's weight is down to 190 pounds. That means he has lost 100 pounds since undergoing lap-band surgery.

So what?

His days are done.

Clarabelle is a side-show now.

Hmmmn, watch out for the man with nothing left to lose.

Go John Daly!! I hope he gets back on the regular tour... Give em hell!!

Before Tiger there was one amazing PGA where the seventh alternate won with huge drives and towering wedges from 180 yards. My golf league at the time was on Thursdays, and nobody went home, everyone was glued to the 19th hole big screen, jaws dropped open. John Daly went from nobody to star in less than four days, too bad he couldn't handle it. Nothing was more painful than those camera shots of him trying to putt with the shakes. If he could have stayed sober and single, imagine the Sundays that could have been in a last paring with Tiger. All those Ryder Cup losses would probably have not happened. Daly is a true greek tragedy - from nobody to insanely popular to an embarrasment in a blink of an eye. If he does get in shape, sober, and away from crazy women, Daly might just put a great bookend to his career. The odds are long, but not as long as the 7th alternate winning the PGA.

I know you don't like the guy, Jon, but can you at least give him credit for apparently getting his act together, both on the course, and more importantly, health-wise? Granted, he may have blown his prime years with his behavior, but there must be some props for making something good out of what his life had become. Can you, me, or any other poster on here honestly say we never got a second chance at something and made the best of it?

I know it's easy to dislike the guy -- he DID squander away a lot of quality career time with his lifestyle. As a fan of his before the downslide, I was ticked off by it and yes, admittedly quit caring about him. But I like how he has managed to turn it around after he hit bottom. Will he stick with it? Only time will tell. I, for one, am willing to give the guy a chance.

190 lbs! Geez, the guy's only 10 lbs. heavier than me. Guess I can't make fun of him anymore. I made as much fun of him as anybody when he was down but it would be great if he was able to make a comeback. As many mistakes as he's made, when he's playing well he's fun to watch. One of the most limber swings I've ever seen. He's still in his 30's isn't he? If so he could have a lot left in his tank if he can stay lean and sober.

I second this....Jon, stop being a curmudgeon. Did the guy f*** up half his life? Absolutely. He is in his early 40s right now, and obviously trying to turn his life around. So instead of spitting on his freshly-dug grave and kicking him while he is down, I am going to support him 100% if he is turning around his life. A competitive John Daly is very good for golf. Even if stuffy traditionalists like Jon don't think so.

There we go with the annual "Daly's back!" headlines...then he disappears ago right after.

A little touchy today, 'Nutz?

And "smarmy"?

Hardly.

Sophisticated, well-travelled and erudite, yes.

Smarmy, never.

October 29, 2009  05:11 PM ET

Yes! John Daly is back! Bust me open another case o' Ballantine, mofo.

October 29, 2009  06:03 PM ET

Me thinks the "rib injury" was a result of too much "Boffing" - prove me wrong John - you total psycho !!!

October 29, 2009  10:32 PM ET

Cocaine is a hell of a drug!

October 30, 2009  01:14 AM ET

The PGA needs Daly as much as Daly needs the PGA. Folks like flawed underdogs....and they don't get much more flawed the Daly. Hopefully he keeps his **** together and makes some good runs next year.

... and possibly something to prove.

Hope he can keep his head screwed on tightly in 2010 ... it could make for some very good Sunday TV.

I wonder if he still enjoys the bottle? Cant help but think how much farther his career would have gone had he not had this habit.

October 30, 2009  02:43 PM ET

If I were him I'd have a few beers and start winning again.
