Cavs committed to twin towers

At least for the short term, get used to seeing the Cavaliers twin 7-footer look of Shaquille O'Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas on the floor together. After barely using it in the preseason, coach Mike Brown is committed to experimenting with the look most nights. His tentative pregame minute sheet has a four-minute slot to play them together in each game, though it may change depending on the opponent.

Having both on the floor didn't work too well last night against the Raptors.
Bosh & Bargnani kept doing a high screen and roll, expopsing Shaq's unwillingness to come out from near the basket.
Created quite a few open looks for Barg. Result: 28 pts for the night for him, and the win.

Mike Brown doesn't get it! I'm optomistic, but I'm a realist too. Their size is great, they're just too slow to be on the floor together.

That should be called commitment to towers of disaster. What kinda stupidity is that? Their average age 36... they sure aint scaring nobody... see what Bargani did to them lastnight? Imagine what Gasol and Bynum will do and don't bring that lineup to Orlando...

Cleveland is clearly looking for answers but nothing can help. The best they can do is go back to how things were last season which means bringing Shaq off the bench. With that... Cavs will have the chance to have a decent regular season but still get ousted early in the playoffs... what worst next year they'll be in rebuilding mode.

The good times are over in Cleveland! Thanks to the bad economy killing Gilberts mortage pockets and Ferry...

October 29, 2009  08:29 AM ET

Good morning one and all...

Wasn't Bosh supposed to retire rather than face the wrath of Shaq? Mike Brown has got to be one of the worst coaches. Once again he ley LBJ sit on the bench while the other team went to work.

Yes - correct.

Phil Jackson also has the Lakers experimenting with a tall lineup where both Bynum and Gasol would be on the floor at the same time. The difference is that these towers actually move around.

In the case of the Cavs, the label is actually *literal* - they are slow and stand still, much as *real* brick and mortar towers.

hmmmm...couple of points .....
1) why didn't the brilliant coach experiment in preseason?
2) 4 minutes ? how'd he come up with that # ? lol
3) the only thing that should be committed is cav management

October 29, 2009  09:06 AM ET

I hear and agree with what you all are saying, but I can't help but notice the focus is on how Clevland played last night.
Anybody notice that Toronto played well: defense had Cavs shooting at only 35% for the night...suprising but true.
Last night's win was an even bigger accomplishment, considering there was only three guys on the team from last year. They haven't even become familliar with each other yet.
Just giving a little credit where credit is due. (and also enjnoying a rare win by the Raps)

This really adds some incentive for LBJ to consider packing his bags. If this is Ferry's idea of helping he has some serious issues.

This season could well be a step back...something I don't think LBJ was counting on. If Ferry is the best they have then the Cavs organization is showing just how little they know about assembling a winning team.

If LBJ is serious about getting a ring he may have no choice but to move elsewhere

I'm willing to give Toronto credit. But unfortunately no matter where they play the focus is always going to be on the Cavs by virtue of that enormous spotlight that follows LBJ everywhere he goes.

Not sure if I agree with you.
They have a few new faces and are still getting used to them(Saq, moon, Parker...).
I wouldn't pull the plug on the season just yet.

October 29, 2009  09:12 AM ET

For a team who is trying to keep their main guy, the Cavs are doing just about everything within their power to facilitate his departure. The only thing left for them to do is put LeBron's house on the market and buy him a plane ticket out of town.

Agreed.
Just rooting for my hometown Raps, the rare chance they give me and all :)

You're right. I am not ready to pull the plug on the Cavs' season either. But keep in mind, the Cavs are historical losers. While other teams rebuild, the Cavs are still waiting to build. It is not a far reach to think they will screw themselves yet again before its all said and done.

October 29, 2009  09:16 AM ET

It seems that Coach Brown's playbook hasn't evolved much - give it to Lebron and let him do his thing. Doesn't Pete Carrill have a cousin that the Cavs can hire to help with the offensive coordination? Basketball is a game of matchups - exploit your strengths and your opponents weaknesses. Give your big men the ball on the box off some staggered screens and let them run the offense. Lebron will get it back on the ball reversal and he'll have open lanes created by the shifting defense. Toronto forced Shaq and Z off the floor instead of Shaq and Z forcing Bargnani and Bosh off the floor. And if you play Z and Shaq together, run a high-low where Z is the post feeder from the foul line.

As for the four-spot, isn't Stromile Swift available? At least he would give them some athleticism and shot-blocking.

Keep some faith, it loosing has to end some time.

October 29, 2009  09:32 AM ET

I know it's only been 2 games but teams with quicker big men are going to be trouble for the Cavs. Not sure Shaq and Big Z are going to be able to keep up with that.

October 29, 2009  09:35 AM ET

They look more like twin statues to me....

That's true... it is early. But the writing has been on the wall since the trade. The fact that the Cavs are off to this kind of start flies in the face of the best expectations.

It does not bode well. lets hope the Cavs make some moves quickly to stem the tide of discontent that we all know is already rising in Cleveland

Toronto played a great game. Bosh more than held his own against the dreaded Shaq without keeling over dead from fear.

"I'll make him quit. Thats what I do"... does Shaq actually believe this crap he spews?

Players aside... something a lot of fans miss is just why teams like the Celtics and LA are so consistent in putting a winning team on the floor. It has nothing to do with the players... it's the organization and how well they know what they're doing.

Boston and LA have long traditions and their front offices are stacked with "family" that were groomed by the organization over the long haul.

They KNOW basketball from the inside.
