Inside Pacquiao's training troubles
I tried to spend some time talking to Manny Pacquiao today at his trainer Freddie Roach's gym in Hollywood, but the world's top pound-for-pound fighter had fallen asleep after a conference call so a publicist friend kindly extended a lunch invitation. "Better get an appetizer," chimed in another publicist on the telephone as we drove to lunch. That was at 1:30 p.m. At 6:45 p.m., this just in: Manny's still asleep. In a training camp that has been knocked off its routine by tax-liability issues that forced Pacquiao to train in his native Philippines for 30 days instead of spending the usual eight weeks of pre-fight activity in Hollywood, Wednesday passed without much work. The wasted day follows other camp slips, including a fight between Pacquiao's business manager and a cornerman and Roach scolding the fighter for dismissing his scheduling directions.

The more money one makes and the more famous one get's reality gets confused with celebrity and priorities get confused and mixed up and the core focus and drive of what made the person gets lost. Usually ending up in a state of confusion, placing blame on others and eventually a loss and a drop in stature.

i think Manny will not win this fight, not because Miguel Coto is better, but manny is surrounded by snakes ( big entourage) and the money has gotten to his head.......or they could be just be putting a fake show for us so people fallow the 24/7 HBO and finally we as boxing fans break down and buy his pay per view.......if i was Roach, i would of dumped his ass the minute he started acting up.............

And miss out on a multi-million dollar payday? Roach is smart to keep Manny and do his best. They go way back to when Manny was a young up and coming fighter with just a powerful left hand. Under the tutelage of Roach, Manny has become a much slicker boxer and can knock someone out with both hands. They are good friends and have history. You don't turn your back on someone because they are acting bratty.
Now, I think manny does have a ton of distractions going in to this fight. Michael Koncz (his "US Adviser) is a slimebag who recently joined the entourage and is certainly only in it for the money. However, Manny is faster and significantly more athletic than Miguel Cotto. I don't think Manny has the power to KO him, but will win by decision because he is too fast/gifted and Roach already knows the gameplan that will take Cotto down. Roach is way too smart

1. Cotto is training in Tampa, Fla for the fight. not Puerto Rico. So your cousin has no idea who he saw in the gym there.
2. Cotto is not a better fighter all around than Manny. Manny is faster, throws straighter punches, and has much better foot speed/movement. Now, I am not saying Cotto is terrible, just that Manny is a much more talented boxer over all. Cotto's only chance is to catch Manny with a quick left hook and KO him. Otherwise, he'll just take repeated combinations to the face.
Manny by UD.

hahahaha, nice back track uno. I think regardless of the distractions Pacman will win this fight. He's seemed pretty unstoppable lately and the fight plans Roach has put together for him thus far have been devastating for his opponents. Don't get me wrong De la Hoya and Hatton may have been on the downturn, but he destroyed those two.

I'll take the torch and disagree with #2... Cotto is a better fighter all around. Manny faster? Sure. Throws a better punch? In my eyes, never. Cotto is ambidextrous, and both hands come with the same speed and power. There's going to be a lot of dangerous punches coming from Manny, that as a southpaw pose bigger problems. Left hook to the body, which with your right foot forward leaves a giant target. Straight right, which will open up if Manny squares his stance more to avoid the left hooks. He's also a lot more of a heady fighter than people give him credit for. He definitely can't go step for step with Manny, but he can outsmart him - especially if he's not listening to Roach (which I think is just lip service for the media). Manny throws bombs, for sure... but Cotto has demonstrated time and time again he can take the punches - especially evident in his loss to Margarito, who probably had his gloves loaded for that fight just as he did against Mosley.
I do like hearing that Manny is currently at 147 tho.... if he can get there or stretching even to 150 after meeting the 145 catch-weight, that'll increase his chances. Cotto comes into 147 fights between 155-160...
One thing is for certain... this is a much more intriguing matchup than Oscar or Hatton, and should make a great fight regardless of outcome. I like how you made your prediction well known, so here's mine: Cotto in 7, left hook to the liver drops Manny. Even tho that will hurt my chances of seeing Floyd v Manny...

I don't doubt Cotto's chin or ability to throw punches equally with both hands, but I think that Manny clearly throws straighter, faster punches. While stylistically this fight does pose more problems for Manny (your comments were right on with Cotto's left hook and straight right being the danger punches), he is too quick and smart to get caught. I think Manny is able to move out of the way quickly enough to avoid the more dangerous body blows and that straight right might be too slow (JMM was quick enough at 130, I don't think Cotto is fast enough to counter with that straight right).
Cotto has definitely slowed down a bit since his fight with Margarcheato (it's BS that he smacked him around with plaster, but the after affects are apparent...look how easily he cuts now). Manny by UD, fo sho

Cotto is a robot fighter plus he lost something in the plaster fight with the mexican cheater. He is tailor made for Manny just come straight ahead. Roach is too smart not to have a superior game plan and Cotto's trainer has zero qualifications to be in the fight game. Manny will decline though since the money and fame is changing his perspective on life and boxing. Sad but who really gives a damn.

Hatton was an abbsolute joke and a farce as a boxer and made Manny look like another Sugar Ray(either one). Cotto is also an average pug now who Manny will handle easily with movement. Smart fight for Manny good payday for Cotto. Both don't lose a thing with a loss because there is always the rematch or a Mayweather in the future. Manny can use the weight as his excuse and Cotto can always claim that idiot training him cost him dearly.

Have your faith my friend. Cotto has looked like a hot mess ever since Margaritto made him into a little girl...cheating or not, Cotto hasn't recovered.

Dont read too much into this missed conference calls because of Manny oversleeping. News reports confirms he just planed in from Manila last Saturday evening and could easily still be jet lagged. Fourteen hour flights will do that to anyone. Pacquaio included.

makes sense. daytime in the US is night time in the philippines. not a fan of those long trips. it takes me about the same time flying from sydney to san francisco. and wasnt he training in the philippine town where the landslides and typhoon happened? manny's training regimen has a reputation of being intense since he hooked up with roach.

Fair enough. I will stress my point about the mental aspect of this fight. I think Cotto is the more naturally sound fighter, whereas Roach made Manny into a sound fighter over their time together (by no means do I think either are "sound" in the sense that Hopkins or Winky are sound). That said, if either fighter takes some hard shots, or feels they are getting behind, I feel Manny would be quicker to abandon his corner than Cotto. So while maybe Roach is preaching circle to the left to avoid open body shots, that may get thrown out the window in favor of the old "hands-free" Manny... kinda like what Manny did against Hatton, but that's most definitely because he saw a weakness early on and capitalized on it, instead of losing discipline.

Like I have said in the past to you numerous times Pac beats Cotto and I will admit he is a great fighter, I think that is fair enough. Now if Cotto wins you have to say he is a great fighter I think imo he was cheated in the Margaritto fight because he came out popping Margaritto and all of a sudden he started to break down, umm even Roach said Margaritto cheated and should have got banned for life.
