Arsenal chasing Mexican teenager

He may be just 16 years of age, but Martin Luis Galvan Romo (or Martin Galvan for short) is already attracting a lot of interest -- not least from Arsenal. The striker has already made history in his homeland when he came on as an 85th-minute sub for Cruz Azul in their 2008 InterLiga win over Monterrey. Galvan was still 30 days shy of his 15th birthday, making him Mexico's youngest ever professional player. He's still yet to make his league bow, but Galvan has already made a name for himself on the international youth scene, scoring three in three for Mexico in the 2009 CONCACAF U17 Championships.

where's our youth phenom?

freddy...anyone...anyone...anyone at all?

October 29, 2009  10:50 AM ET

Don't go to Arsenal. Look at Vela. He had good stints while on loan in Spain. Now he's just a Carling Cup player.

Hopefully Galvan has been watching the never-ending soap opera that is Freddy Adu.

Meaning he has advisors that won't make similar mistakes. Of course, getting into a system like Arsenal would likely prevent a soap opera from happening.

Could be a nice replacement for RvP when Wenger sells him for a nice chunk of change.

Anton Peterlin, Cody Arnoux isn't bad either (both with Everton). These guys SHOULD be our future. And Gil really is the talk of the soccerworld community. What about the 2 kids who passed on IMG for Europe (good move). Didn't they go to Germany?

Agreed. It'd be a good idea for him to go to a mid-table Spanish team and make his move to the Premiership when he's established himself.

Probably playing another sport. Forgive me for being cynical this morning.

Anton Peterlin and Cody Arnoux are already in their 20s, and if they were really gonna be phenoms, there would be more evidence of it.

As it is, they're both twenty-somethings relegated to an EPL reserve squad on short contracts. Neither are going anywhere important. As far as I know, neither are even particular standouts on the reserve team.

If players like Altidore and Michael Bradley are of a similar age and on the first-team for top-flight clubs but still aren't considered true phenoms, then I don't see what there is to be excited about in Arnoux and Peterlin.

They will either come back to MLS, go down to lower-division teams in England, or, eventually, both.

Gyua and Renken...

Gyua had issues with Wilmer, an ego filled by the hype of his own dad...

Renken is injured, but went for the pro contract that will see him playing in Germany and Vancouver til they are 17-18 yrs old...

Gyua has promise but a foot filled with led.
Renken is very much a promising prospect... hopefully he recovers from his injury and makes a splash in germany...

agreed with the age

but both players are getting PT with the reserves. I wouldnt be surprised to see Cody get loaned out to a CCC or League 1 team....

I'm in the same boat as you with respect to our "prospects" at this point. But I am very encouraged to see some of them dumping the American developmental model until somebody with some ability builds it into something respectable.

Very well put, actually. The true phenoms are identified by the age of 15 usually. If they've gone past the age of 20 the odds of being a late bloomer falls off the shelf dramatically.

Well, phenom may be the wrong word for Arnoux and Peterlin, but let's surrender on our kids too early. Everton wouldn't have taken a chance if they didn't see something. And Moyes has a good history with American players...

October 29, 2009  01:32 PM ET

Okay, well, in conclusion then: we don't have any phenoms. There, are ya all happy now!?!?!?
Thanks for throw rabbit turds in my chocolate soup.
;)

No worries, I know Oter is all over it (like Sasha Grey in a GB flic) and will keep us up to date when the first "Tiger Woods of Soccer" finally rises from the ashes of our scorched American earth.

Maybe I missed the memo, but what other Americans besides Tim Howard has Moyes coached? I know he liked what he saw in America about the athleticism of the players here, but I'm not sure he's actually developed any American talent besides Howard (and I do credit Moyes with rebuilding Howard after SAF bounced him from United).

October 29, 2009  02:57 PM ET

Martin could have had a chance to show more people his talent, but he was left of off the U-17 World Cup squad for disciplinary reasons.

He was pretty much the major reason McBride came to England from germany. He coached McBride at Preston North End and was a verbal proponent of his early on when the English press/critics said McBride was too slow and unskilled. He later followed Moyes to Everton. So, McBride and Howard... That's two more Americans than a lot of managers have managed in England.
