NHL shuns stunned Gretzky

The league's disregard for Wayne Gretzky was evident Monday in bankruptcy court, where an agreement by Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes to sell the franchise to the NHL was announced. Gretzky is seeking $8.2 million in deferred salary. Some have rolled their eyes at this but being a millionaire shouldn't preclude someone from being paid what's promised. Sources close to Gretzky say he's disappointed at the treatment by the NHL, who never sought out his interest when they made an initial bid to purchase the team. He was open to the restructuring of his contract or discussing a different role but the league never initiated discussion and instead contacted a Gretzky representative and said they would not be picking up his contract as part of their purchase. Gretzky was stunned.

Screwing one of the legends of the game. Nice. Another thing wrong with the Poison Dwarf's NHL. Number 9,012 by my count.

H*, H*, h*, Merry X-ed out reality check. Santa Flaws, turns out not to be a Jolly Old Elf, but, an evil gnome in an Italian suit, replete with lawyer's shingle and sheep-skin, to boot - omg, I think I'm starting to feel a weentsy empathetic twinge, for yon bolden-fleeced Gretzelsky.
Methinks, za shyte just started to hit, yon fan.
End result? The bolden-fleeced Great Buns hovers near bankruptcy. whilst his wiley mentor begins to exhibit postures hitherto unknown to humankind - in vain attempts, initially geared toward holding his sacred position, and stature, then laternly to avoid persecution and prosecution, and eventual jail-time - and I mean the real thing, as in the federal plan.

Gary Bettman didn't even know what a puck was until he was named NHL's commissioner. He knows nothing about the history and traditions that made the NHL was it was. It is obvious by the way he treats hockey's greatest players that he could not care less what happened in the NHL in the past. It is long past due to remove him and put someone in the commissioner's office that cares about the NHL.

Shouldn't hockey coaches win some games, then command a salary in big number?? You can't live off the past forever.

Lots of athletes, current and former, can live off the past forever. Ask Favre.

Gary continues to salt the earth of the NHL landscape, good work Gary.

This will come back to bite Bettman, hard. You don't mess with a man like Wayne Gretzky in hockey. You think that just because he's not playing anymore he doesn't still have influence throughout the league? You think Sather and Moose in New York won't be on his side (Especially since the Rangers already have their issues with the league). This is ridiculous, and disrespectful to a man who has consistently done everything he could to help the game and the league in general. I hope this is the tipping point the league's owners finally need to turn on this little plick.

What's the difference between God and Gary Bettman? God doesn't think he's Gary Bettman.

Like Wayne, what have you done for me lately.........

Moyes/NHL is a joke!! Wont take Jim's money, but you will settle for considerably less! At the same time, you offend the man who made the NHL what it is today! Wayne Gretsky, one of the greatest to ever play, shunned by the league that benefitied most from his presence. I am not a huge Gretsky fan, but really, you have got to be kidding me! The NHL IS A JOKE!! I heard they are hiring Donaghy as a linesman..ha

Remember this is a Bankruptcy proceeding and Gretsky is not only a creditor but a partner in the venture. The Court makes judgements based on a balance the bankruptcy estate and the creditors

The NHL as an entity had to move to clear the franchise of as many legacy liabilities as it could...that is not the Midgets call...believe me he's just a mouthpiece on the PR ide(and a bad one). If you reaffirm contracts that do not benefit new ownership and the new ownership fires the contracted party then there is potential protracted litigation further lessening franchise value.

And its not like the great one is a swell coach(in layman's terms). See: Magic Johnson

who can fire Bettman?

The owners... which they will when Flordia, Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville all file for bankruptcy like Phoenix did.

But with Gretzky no longer an owner, his coaching contract would have been seriously reduced and he probably would have lost the director of hockey operations title and any others he had. Wanye it's time to distance yourself from the league and spend your time watching your sons play football and hockey.

October 30, 2009  09:33 AM ET

he may be the greatest player in NHL history but he's been a piss poor, lousy, borderline incompetent coach for Phoenix. He shouldn't be asking for that money since what exactly did he do to earn it??? Season after season of failure.

October 30, 2009  09:33 AM ET

Maybe Gretzky should run the NHLPA? He is a pretty shrewd negotiator (see his contract with Coyotes). And it would be a great way to stick it to Bettman.

pay the man for all those 4th place finishes!!!!!!!
