Weis: Clausen to delay NFL talk

The NFL just wants a yes or no answer eventually, Charlie Weis says. And five more games can do a lot to impact the decision-making process either way. And repeated questions on the subject are bound to be irritating, if not outright distracting. So the Notre Dame coach laid out the plan for discussing an NFL future with junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen: It won't be discussed until the regular season is over. "We're not even going to address the subject until the first week in December," Weis said Thursday night. "We've already addressed the fact that we're not going to address it. So we're just worrying about the next five games, starting with Washington State. First of all, let's see how we play. But we'll revisit it then."

Who cares?

Not related to this post, but question for future posters today....

What if Alabama or Florida win out, and so does Texas, but so does Iowa, Cincy, Boise and TCU? I know what will happen, but why should it? That would freeze out two legitimate title contenders from BCS conferences (Iowa and Cincy) - I know everyone's opinion of Big Ten and Big East, but still, they are one of the 6 BCS conferences.

So here's my real question, doesn't it seem as if fate is playing the presidents of these major college conferences for fools? How many years now have we had a "split" decision and real open questions on which two teams should meet for the national championship...at least 5 or 6 now.

It's almost like the BCS is at the plate and can only hit heaters, and God is up there on the mound throwing sinkers, split fingers, curves. The batter is getting more and more ticked off, slamming his bat into the dirt, clinching his teeth, face red with rage...Give me the dang fastball...OK, here's a 60 mph knuckler.

Just saying, it's really stretching their rationale.

Clausen is leaving Notre Dame for the NFL after the season...

... the combination of Weis and potential first round dollars is enough to leave South Bend.

One of the few times I come down on the side of Charlie - tell the NFL to go pound sand. The season is far more important than making a decision on Clausen's pro future.

Woulda... Coulda... Shoulda...

I hope it happens and the fan reaction is to scream bloody hell. The School Presidents will shrug their shoulders, the NCAA will continue to spew their blather about "the special relationship with the bowls" (over half of which are a direct product of the WorldWide Leader) and nothing will change.

Of course, either Florida or Alabama will lose, which gives the powers-that-be their little comfort cushion of "see - the season matters". In the meantime the BCS conferences get their tens of millions of dollars, the kids get to say they got to go to a bowl game, and the fiction of a true National Champion continues to be perpetuated.

Add in a dash of Sam Bradford shoulder surgery and color him gone!

Clausen is definitely going to be gone after this season

This may not play out, but it's more interesting than Clausen's decision, since we know he's leaving. Actually, this scenario could actually play out exactly. An eight team playoff with the 6 BCS champions and Boise and TCU getting at large bids would settle everything in three weeks of playoffs and still have players home by New Years. You could have four bowl games in the first round during Christmas week, keeping the current bowl games in place, then create two non-bowl playoff games on January 1 and the Championship on January 8. There already play it that late now, so no more excuses.

This dude is "NOT" ready for the NFL. He's not really good at the college level.

October 30, 2009  08:35 AM ET

He will have the same success in the NFL as Brady Quinn so he may as well stay in school and enjoy his stardom at ND because when he goes to the NFL he will be another afterthought.

October 30, 2009  08:41 AM ET

Clausen's gotta wonder if he'll do as well as another great ND QB, Brady Quinn, who as we all know, has had a stellar NFL career to date.

October 30, 2009  08:41 AM ET

Well, if Notre Dame doesn't just wax Wazzou, it will be telling barometer of this Weis team...

October 30, 2009  08:42 AM ET

I would stay in if I were Clausen, He still needs to learn a little more. I think it would be a huge mistake to try and mak a dash at the NFL right now. Especially with people like bradford and mccoy and tebow going this year too.

Those other three QB's play in Mickey Mouse offenses.

If you were a GM, would you spend a first round draft pick on Jimmy Clausen?

Right, because Claussen and Quinn are the exact same quarterback.
